Abstract

The temperature dependence of the viscosity coefficients η1 and η3 of the liquid crystal MBBA has been measured. The temperature range was from 23 to 50 °C. A magnetic field was used to orient the liquid crystal. The results are η1=1.54 P and η3=0.79 P at 23 °C in disagreement with earlier studies. Possible factors contributing to this disagreement are discussed. The angular dependence of the viscosity coefficient in a plane normal to the flow direction is found to be in good agreement with Leslie’s theory of anisotropic fluids. The method employed is a direct measurement of viscous force at a very low shear rate.
