Abstract

Andrew Sayer’s work has covered most of the significant issues of our time. Perhaps the most urgent issue today is the climate and ecological crisis, and this provides a particularly important context in which to explore his work on inequality. Extreme and growing inequality is not only morally objectionable, it is, as ecological economists argue, a barrier to achieving a steady-state economy, and, as degrowth theorists and activists point out, it is an ideological framework that is used to justify a growth system, despite the implausibility of claims made in this regard.
