Abstract
Cryogenic surgical cannulas are presently being used to create lesions in human tissue. A review of this procedure including a discussion of laboratoq apparatus and some experimental results is given by Cooper.3 When a eannula is inserted into the tissue and brought to a cryogenic temperature, a thermal field develops in the media. A lesion is formed as the t,issue in the neighborhood of the cannula undergoes a phase change, that is, freezes. The freezing front will propagate through the tissue until a steady state is reached for the particular cannula ternperake. In effect, this steady state condition determines the ultimate size of the lesion which can be formed. Our objecr* = kj(l.6 T,) tive is to present a method for predicting the PLr”2 t
