Abstract
What may very well be, in several respects, the most rapid and most extensive case of religious expansion in history, has been under way in Africa for the last seventy years or so the spectacular rise of the Church in Black Africa, the spread of Islam, the emergence of new syncretistic religions, and the resurgence of traditional religions. All of these phenomena are enhanced and dramatized by the population explosion in Africa, which, it is estimated, will have produced a population in AD 2000 seven times that in the year 1900oo. This religious expansion is better documented, statistically, than any other known case of its magnitude, enabling us to compile overall assessments of the type shown in Table I.
