Abstract
Many discussions of libertarianism or the appropriate demarcation between markets and government focus on philosophical and moral claims and justifications. While this is a valuable line of discussion, this article provides an economic perspective on the issue. The result is an analytic framework for assessing the appropriate scope for and role of government activity. This framework broadly results in a hyper-federal system with a center that is strong but circumscribed to transaction cost-reducing activities.
