Abstract

This paper examines Generalized MultiprotocolLabel Switching (GMPLS) control plane security bycontrasting the GMPLS control plane security mechanismsto the ATM control plane security mechanisms. Thesecurity mechanisms available in the GMPLS control planeare presented; thereafter the ATM control plane securitymechanisms are examined and contrasted with the GMPLScontrol plane mechanisms. This demonstrates how the singlesecurity solution of the ATM control plane provides asimple, consistent and comprehensive set of security servicesas compared to the GMPLS control plane securitymechanisms which are implemented on a protocol byprotocol basis. We conclude by noting that implementationof GMPLS control plane security mechanisms isadministratively complex and suggest the adoption of asingle security solution for the GMPLS control plane andrequirements for such a solution.
