Abstract
Several aspects of the use of glass capillary columns in the gas-liquid chromatography of steroids are discussed. The preparation of these columns is described in detail. It consists of two steps: pretreatment of the glass and coating with an apolar phase. Etching, silanisation and the use of surface-active agents were studied as pretreatment steps. An intermediate test permits an evaluation of the pretreatment and indicates the actual behaviour of the glass wall. Treatment with a surface-active agent, in combination with a “static” coating procedure, is most satisfactory. The performances of some of the columns obtained (both bad and good) are presented and several chromatograms illustrate the possibilities for steroid analysis.
