Abstract

An iron skimmer and extractor tube have been used to extract ions from a high-β plasma puff as it traveled down Bz and octopole magnetic guide fields. The plasma puff was generated by a theta-pinch plasma gun operating with H2. The extracted ions were analyzed by a crossed-field velocity analyzer in series with an electrostatic energy analyzer. For the case of the octopole guide field, analysis of the energy spectrum yielded values for the plasma parameters in good agreement with other determinations. For the Bz guide field, the magnetic field trapped in the extractor apparatus produced a magnetic barrier that reflected the plasma so as to distort the energy spectrum and produced temperature estimates that were too high and density estimates that were too low. However, for the Bz guide field, an upper limit could be placed on the concentration of impurity ions.
