ABSTRACT The reclamation of post-mining areas in open-pit mining is a critical focus of modern environmental research due to its ecological, social, and economic implications. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of global research trends from 2000 to 2023, based on the Web of Science Core Collection. Key findings highlight a significant increase in publications, with China, the United States, and Canada leading the field. The analysis identifies dominant journals, influential authors, and interdisciplinary approaches emphasising ecological restoration, soil improvement, and biodiversity enhancement. Future research should prioritise climate change impacts, innovative technologies, and global collaboration to advance sustainable post-mining land management.

Analysis of research hotspots and trends in pediatric ophthalmopathy based on 10 years of WoSCC literature.

Ophthalmopathy occurring in childhood can easily lead to irreversible visual impairment, and therefore a great deal of clinical and fundamental researches have been conducted in pediatric ophthalmopathy. However, a few studies have been performed to analyze such large amounts of research using bibliometric methods. This study intended to apply bibliometric methods to analyze the research hotspots and trends in pediatric ophthalmopathy, providing a basis for clinical practice and scientific research to improve children's eye health. Publications related to pediatric ophthalmopathy were searched and identified in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. Bibliometric and visualized analysis was performed using the WoSCC analysis system and CiteSpace.6.2.6 software, and high-impact publications were analyzed. This study included a total of 7,177 publications from 162 countries and regions. Of these, 2,269 from the United States and 1,298 from China. The centrality and H-index were highest in the United States at 0.27 and 66, respectively. The University of London and Harvard University had the highest H-index at 37. Freedman,Sharon F published 55 publications, with the highest H-index at 19. The emerging burst keyword in 2020-2023 was "eye tracking," and the burst keywords in 2021-2023 were "choroidal thickness," "pediatric ophthalmology," "impact" and "childhood glaucoma." Retinopathy of prematurity, myopia, retinoblastoma and uveitis in juvenile idiopathic arthritis were the main topics in the high-impact publications, with clinical studies in the majority, especially in retinopathy of prematurity. Eye health in children is a research hotspot, with the United States publishing the largest number of papers and having the greatest influence in research on pediatric ophthalmopathy, and China coming in second. The University of London and Stanford University had the greatest influence. Freedman, Sharon F was the most influential author. Furthermore, "choroidal thickness," "pediatric ophthalmology," "impact," "childhood glaucoma" and "eye tracking"are the latest hotspots in the field of pediatric ophthalmopathy. These hotspots represent hot diseases, hot technologies and holistic concepts, which are exactly the research trends in the field of pediatric ophthalmopathy, providing guidance and grounds for clinical practice and scientific research on children's eye health.

A bibliometric analysis of international publication trends in premature ejaculation research (2008-2018).

The incidence of premature ejaculation (PE) has been on the rise over the years. Thus, significant research efforts have been directed toward understanding the pathogenesis and hence treatment of PE. Here, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the worldwide trends in research outputs in the field of PE. This study investigated the universal findings of previous PE studies and the trending issues surrounding the condition. We employed the Web of Science Core Collection for data collection. The Excel (2016) and CiteSpace IV were used for information analysis. The information was categorized using journal names, institutions, research frontiers, citation reports, regions/countries, and authors. A sum of 886 publications concerning PE between 2008 and 2018 were identified as of July 6, 2019. The highest number of publications was identified in the Journal of Sexual Medicine published. The United States of America (USA) had the highest number of publications and H-index value. The highest co-citations were from Waldinger MD. The most common keyword was 'drug treatment'. A steady pattern was observed for PE publications done between the period of 2008-2018. Thus, the USA is at the forefront of research on PE research. The interesting advanced research frontiers were drug treatment, circumcision, and sertraline.

Bibliometric analysis of global research trends in magnetic resonance imaging studies of substantia nigra in Parkinson's disease (2001-2024).

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a globally prevalent neurodegenerative disorder, primarily characterized by muscle rigidity, resting tremor, and bradykinesia. The incidence of PD is rapidly escalating worldwide. Numerous studies have been conducted on the application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in investigating the substantia nigra (SN) in PD patients. However, to date, no bibliometric analysis has been performed on this specific research area. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current status in MRI research on the SN in PD patients. MRI study records related to the SN in PD patients from 2001 to 2024 were searched by using the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database and then the CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to conduct bibliometric analysis. Our analysis found that the number of published articles related studies on MRI of the SN in PD showed an overall upward trend over the past decade, in which Lehericy, Stephane, Du, Guangwei, and Huang, Xuemei are the top three authors with the most articles. Additionally, United States, China and Germany are the main contributors to MRI studies of SN in PD. And Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Florida and Seoul National University are the leading institutions in the field. Finally, the keyword analysis showed that the hotspots and trends of research in this field are mainly concentrated in quantitative susceptibility mapping, neuroimaging, and neuromelanin-sensitive MRI. These analysis identified the most influential authors, institutions, countries and research hotspots in the field of SN-MRI research in PD, which has reference significance for the research interest in this field and provides a new idea for PD prevention.

Analysis of research trends and development prospects of soluble guanylate cyclase stimulators/activators: using bibliometric methods.

The stimulation and activation of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) has been a prominent focus of study in recent years. Currently, sGC stimulators/activators have a wide range of applications in various fields. However, there remains a gap in bibliometric analysis on this topic. We aim to visualize the research hotspots and trends in the field of sGC stimulators or activators. This analysis can equip researchers to understand current findings and forecast future trends efficiently. The researchers searched for publications on sGC stimulators or activators in Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) on 22 July 2024. We then organized and analyzed the data using Microsoft Excel, online tool (Weishengxin), R, VOS viewer, and CiteSpace. 1,879 papers from WoSCC were gathered for analysis, comprising 1,582 articles and 297 reviews. The United States is the most productive country. And Germany stands out as the country with the most robust collaboration. The most productive institution is BAYER AG. Furthermore, the majority of journals with citation frequencies in the top 10 belong to Q1. The Professor Stasch, JP is the most prolific author and the top co-cited author. Currently, the influential keywords include "riociguat", "outcome", "guanylate cyclase stimulator", "heart failure", "natriuretic peptide", "vericiguat", "reduced ejection fraction", "mortality" and "placebo". The future research hotspots will focus on the following aspects based on the current research hotspots: the safety verification of riociguat, the clinical efficacy of vericiguat for other types of heart failure, the role of praliciguat in diabetes nephropathy, and the efficacy and safety of newly discovered drugs. Furthermore, actively exploring new therapeutic directions for sGC stimulators or activators may also be an important trend in the future development of this field.

Analysis of research trends and hotspots in emergency department overcrowding: A bibliometric study based on VOSview and Scimago Graphica.

ObjectiveAnalyze the research trends and hotspots in emergency department overcrowding derived from the Web of Science Core Collection database.MethodsThe Web of Science Core Collection database was utilized as the search data source for the bibliometric analysis, and the associated articles published from January 1, 1990, to October 1, 2023.The search was executed using the following formula: TS = (crowded OR overcrowd OR crowding OR overcrowding) AND TS = (Emergency department). VOSviewer, Scimago Graphicaand and additional tools were utilized for bibliometric analysis, and visual knowledge graphs were created.ResultsA total of 1869 articles were included in this study. The country with the largest number of publications is the United States. The primary research institution is the University of Toronto. Jesse M. Pines and his group at George Washington University have the greatest influence in the field of emergency department overcrowding research. Carlos A. Camargo is the author with the highest h-index in this field. High-frequency keywords include "length-of-stay", "impact", "mortality", "triage", "association", "outcomes", "time", "management", "access block", and "quality". The clustering graph reveals that all keywords fall into seven categories.ConclusionWe recommend intensifying research on emergency department overcrowding in more developing countries. In the future, the application of emerging technologies in emergency medicine as well as the mental health of emergency patients and medical staff may become research hotspots in this field.

A bibliometric analysis of international publication trends in brain atrophy research (2008-2023).

Brain atrophy is a type of neurological and psychiatric disorder characterized by a decrease in brain tissue volume and weight for various reasons and can have a serious impact on the quality of life of patients. Although there are many studies on brain atrophy, there is a lack of relevant bibliometric studies. Therefore, this study aims to provide a visual analysis of global trends in brain atrophy research over the past 16 years. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to visually analyze publication output, scientific collaborations, cocitations, publishing journals, and keywords to determine the current status and future trends of brain atrophy research. Materials published from 2008 to 2023 were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. This study placed no restrictions on the types of literature and focused on English language publications. A total of 3,371 publications were included in the analysis. From 2008 to 2023, the number of publications increased annually. In terms of national and academic institutions, universities in the United States and University College London rank first in publication out. Barkhof Frederik and Zivadinov Robert are the most prolific researchers in this field. The publication with the highest cocitation strength is "Deep gray matter volume loss drives disability worsening in multiple sclerosis." Keyword clustering analysis showed that "Alzheimer's disease" and "multiple sclerosis" are current popular topics. The analysis of emergent words indicates that "cerebral small vessel disease," "neurodegeneration," and "cortex/gray matter volume" may become hot research topics in the coming years. This study analyses papers on brain atrophy from the past 16 years, providing a new perspective for research in this field. In the past 16 years, research on brain atrophy has received increasing attention. The quality of articles in this field is generally high. Extensive national cooperation already exists. The statistical results indicate that a stable core author group in the field of brain atrophy has almost formed.

El marco de acción se centra en las cadenas productivas del sector agropecuario en Colombia, teniendo como marco referencial 13 áreas temáticas, donde la identificación de referentes a nivel internacional para las cadenas productivas debe ser coherente con las demandas particulares de cada cadena y con las áreas temáticas que las abarcan, de tal manera que los resultados de este proceso sean insumo para el acortamiento de brechas y fortalecimiento del sector. Como caso de estudio se enmarca la investigación en el análisis de tendencias en investigación básica para las cadenas productivas del cacao, láctea, carne bovina y papa, obteniendo un análisis de tendencias en investigación, identificación de referentes internacionales, temáticas prioritarias, etc.

Analysis of research hotspots and trends in epididymitis from 2014 to 2025: a visual analysis based on bibliometrics and scientific graphs from multiple databases

BackgroundEpididymitis is a common urogenital infection in adult men caused by sexually transmitted pathogens, urinary tract infections, trauma, or autoimmune mechanisms, with etiologies varying by age. In addition to severe pain and reduced quality of life, it may result in complications such as abscess formation, testicular atrophy, and infertility. Despite its clinical significance, comprehensive analyses of research trends remain limited. Bibliometric and knowledge-mapping approaches can provide quantitative insights into the field’s development and hotspots.MethodsUsing the Web of Science Core Collection and the PubMed Database, we retrieved literature related to epididymitis published from January 1, 2014, to September 10, 2025. Bibliometric analyses of publication volume, journals, authors, institutions, countries, and keywords were conducted using the Bibliometrix R package (v5.1.1), VOSviewer (v1.6.20), and CiteSpace (v6.4. R2). Scientific knowledge maps were generated to identify research hotspots and developmental trends in epididymitis.ResultsA total of 497 publications from 2,887 authors across 955 institutions in 67 countries were analyzed. Annual output remained stable at 30–50 articles since 2014. Andrologia was the most influential journal, and Pilatz Adrian was the leading author. China produced the most publications, the United States had the highest total citations, and Germany showed the highest average citation impact and strongest international collaboration. Justus Liebig University Giessen ranked first among institutions. Research trends have shifted from clinical diagnosis toward pathogenic and immunological mechanisms. Human studies focus on clinical features and treatment outcomes, whereas animal studies emphasize immunoinflammatory mechanisms and reproductive impacts.ConclusionResearch on epididymitis is advancing from clinical observation toward molecular immunology and precision therapy. Future studies should further focus on sexually transmitted pathogens, the immunopathological mechanisms of epididymitis, and the relationship between chronic inflammation and male infertility.

Prognostic factors and outcomes in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia: a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global research trends.

Pediatric AML prognosis research has advanced significantly, yet gaps in understanding genetic and molecular interactions persist. Despite improved outcomes, relapse/refractory cases and personalized treatment integration remain critical clinical challenges. To analyze the global research landscape on pediatric AML prognosis, highlight influential components and collaborations, and identify major potential research trends. Publications on pediatric AML prognosis research from 1999 to 2023 were retrieved from the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. Bibliometric analysis was conducted using CiteSpace and VOSviewer to identify leading countries, prominent institutions, high-impact journals, key research categories, influential authors, and emerging research topics. The bibliometric analysis encompassed 924 publications, with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital emerging as the most prolific institution. The United States leads globally in terms of countries, institutions, journals, and authors. Todd A. Alonzo ranks highest in publication volume, while U. Creutzig leads in citations. The top research categories were Oncology, Hematology, and Pediatrics. Key research topics included genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, targeted therapies, immune therapy, and integrative diagnostic approaches. This bibliometric analysis highlights significant advancements in pediatric AML prognosis over the past 25 years, driven by the integration of genetic markers, immunological insights, transcriptomics, and epigenomics, which have collectively transformed risk stratification and treatment strategies. Overcoming challenges, such as discovering new therapeutic targets and enhancing treatment combinations, will depend on global collaboration and advanced technologies to propel the field forward.

Bibliometric and visualized analysis of nanomedicine research trends for gastric cancer during the early 21st century.

Gastric cancer (GC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in East Asia. Nanomedicine has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance the precision and efficacy of GC diagnosis and therapy. This study aimed to systematically evaluate global research trends and knowledge structures in GC nanomedicine during the early 21st century using bibliometric and visualization analyses. Relevant publications during the early 21st century were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) and analyzed using R, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, Scimago Graphica, and Pajek. The included records spanned 2003-2026, with the two items labeled "2026" reflecting early access articles already indexed in WoSCC at the time of data retrieval. A total of 1,717 publications authored by 9,857 researchers across 2,192 institutions in 83 countries were included. China, Iran, and the United States were identified as leading contributors, with major research hubs at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Islamic Azad University. Research output exhibited a sustained upward trend, with citation frequency and H-index steadily increasing. Five primary research hotspots were identified: nano-drug delivery and chemotherapy optimization, targeted therapy and signaling pathway modulation, photothermal/photodynamic synergistic therapies, functionalized nanomaterials for diagnostics, and immunotherapeutic/antibacterial nanomedicine. Over time, the field has evolved from early nanocarrier design (2003-2015) to targeted therapy and diagnostic applications (2015-2020), and more recently toward immunotherapy and green synthesis strategies (2020-2026). Importantly, most studies in this field remain at the preclinical or early translational stage, underscoring the need for further validation using standardized preclinical models and well-designed clinical trials. This bibliometric study provides a comprehensive overview of the developmental trajectory, key contributors, and emerging trends in GC nanomedicine, offering valuable insights to guide future interdisciplinary research, clinical translation, and strategic resource allocation.

Global research trends and hotspots in digital health in hypertension: A comprehensive bibliometric analysis (1992–2025)

BackgroundDigital health interventions are transforming hypertension management, yet the evolution and focus of this research domain remain underexplored. This study provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global research trends and hotspots in digital health for hypertension management.MethodsRelevant publications were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric and visualization analyses were conducted using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R-Bibliometrix, covering the period from 1992 to 2025.ResultsA total of 1368 English-language articles, authored by 8918 researchers from 5268 institutions in over 100 countries/regions, were identified. These articles appeared in 435 journals, with publication output showing rapid growth since 2011 and peaking in 2022. The United States led in both productivity and international collaboration, with Duke University, the University of California System, and Harvard University as the top institutions. Bosworth HB emerged as the most prolific and influential author, while JMIR mHealth and uHealth and the Journal of Medical Internet Research were the leading journals. Keyword co-occurrence analysis revealed five major research clusters: (1) Digital interventions and patient management; (2) Population health and lifestyle factors; (3) Clinical practice, guidelines, and measurement; (4) Disease burden, outcomes, and epidemiology; and (5) Health equity, access, and technology utilization. Evidence suggests that digital health interventions improved patient self-management, medication adherence, and blood pressure control, highlighting their potential for better clinical outcomes. Recent burst keywords such as “burden,” “telehealth,” “meta-analysis,” and “United States” indicate shifting research priorities toward implementation, health equity, and real-world impact.ConclusionThis study identified rapid growth and diversification in digital health research for hypertension, with the United States, leading academic institutions, and journals such as JMIR mHealth and uHealth at the forefront. Five major research clusters were revealed, spanning digital interventions, clinical practices, lifestyle factors, disease burden, and health equity. Recent trends show increased focus on telehealth, implementation challenges, and equity of access. Future research should further integrate digital health solutions into routine hypertension care, address disparities, and systematically evaluate their real-world impact.

Bibliometric and visual analysis of membranous nephropathy literature from 2010 to 2023

BackgroundMembranous glomerulonephritis, also known as membranous nephropathy (MN), is a common cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults. Despite extensive research on MN, bibliometric studies on the subject are scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to provide a visual analysis of global trends in membranous nephropathy research over the past 13 years.MethodsThis study conducted a bibliometric and visual analysis of global trends in MN research from 2010 to 2023. Articles related to MN were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. Tools such as CiteSpace and VOSviewer were utilized to analyze publications, countries, institutions, authors, publishing journals, co-cited references, and keywords to identify the current state and future trends in MN research.ResultsThe analysis encompassed 1,624 publications, showing an annual increase from 2010 to 2023. The People’s Republic of China emerged as the most active country in this field, while France’s Sorbonne Universite and Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale (Inserm) led in publication volume among academic institutions. Debiec Hanna stood out as the most prolific author. BMC Nephrology had the highest number of publications, making it the most favored journal in the field. The article with the greatest co-citation intensity was “Primary Membranous Nephropathy,” a review published in 2017.ConclusionThis study shows that there has been increasing interest in membranous nephropathy over the past 13 years. The most frequently encountered keywords were “membranous nephropathy” “nephrotic syndrome,” and “glomerulonephritis.” Analysis of emerging terms indicated that “a2 receptor antibody,” “domain containing 7a,” and “t cell” may remain prominent subjects of research in the forthcoming years. The findings highlight key research trends and areas of interest that can inform researchers, clinicians, and policymakers about the current state of MN research and help guide future research directions and clinical practice.

Unraveling the HIV-malaria interactions: a bibliometric analysis of global research trends and emerging insights

BackgroundThe co-infection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and malaria has emerged as an urgent public health challenge in tropical areas where the two diseases geographically converge, stimulating extensive biomedical investigations into their pathobiological interactions. This study aims to elucidate the current status and research trends regarding the interactions between HIV and malaria through bibliometric and visualized analysis.MethodsResearch on the interactions between HIV and malaria was collected from the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric analysis and knowledge graph visualization were performed on 4,717 articles published between 1995 and 2024, using CiteSpace software.ResultsThe results demonstrate a fluctuating upward pattern in the number of publications related to HIV and malaria interactions. According to the cooperative network visualization analysis, the United States, the University of London, and Grant Dorsey possess the greatest publication counts among all countries, institutions, and authors, respectively. The keyword and cocited reference analysis distinguish the primary research hotspots and frontiers as the epidemiological study of different populations in the African region, pathogenic mechanisms underlying HIV-malaria co-infection, strategies for the prevention and treatment of HIV and malaria co-infection, interactions between antimalarial and antiretroviral drugs, and malaria vaccine responses in HIV-infected individuals.ConclusionThis bibliometric investigation outlines the research hotspots, frontiers, and trends regarding the interactions between HIV and malaria. Future research should delineate pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions between antimalarial and antiretroviral drugs to enhance clinical efficacy and medication safety and develop effective malaria vaccines that benefit HIV-positive populations in endemic areas.

Analysis of research topics and trends in investigator-initiated research/trials (IIRs/IITs): A topic modeling study

Background:With the exponential growth of publications in the field of investigator-initiated research/trials (IIRs/IITs), it has become necessary to employ text mining and bibliometric analysis as tools for gaining deeper insights into this area of study. By using these methods, researchers can effectively identify and analyze research topics within the field.Methods:This study retrieved relevant publications from the Web of Science Core Collection and conducted bioinformatics analysis. The latent Dirichlet allocation model, which is based on machine learning, was utilized to identify subfield research topics.Results:A total of 4315 articles related to IIRs/IITs were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. After excluding duplicates and articles with missing abstracts, a final dataset of 3333 articles was included for bibliometric analysis. The number of publications showed a steady increase over time, particularly since 2000. The United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Canada, Denmark, Japan, Switzerland, and France emerged as the most productive countries in terms of IIRs/IITs. The citation analysis revealed intriguing trends, with certain highly cited articles showing a significant increase in citation frequency in recent years. A model with 45 topics was deemed the best fit for characterizing the extensively researched fields within IIRs/IITs. Our analysis revealed 10 top topics that have garnered significant attention, spanning domains such as community health, cancer treatment, brain development and disease mechanisms, nursing research, and stem cell therapy. These top topics offer researchers valuable directions for further investigation and innovation. Additionally, we identified 12 hot topics, which represent the most cutting-edge and highly regarded research areas within the field.Conclusion:This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the current research landscape and provides valuable insights for researchers working in this domain.

Research Trends and Visualization Analysis of Autoimmune Disease-Related Liver Cancer from 2004 to 2024: A Bibliometric Study

Background: Despite the rapid increase in scientific research output related to autoimmune disease-associated liver cancer (ADRLC) in recent years, there is currently a lack of a comprehensive and objective grasp of the cutting-edge progress and future research directions in this research field. Methods: A comprehensive bibliometric analysis of ADRLC literature was conducted using Biblioshiny, VOSviewer, Scimago Graphica, CiteSpace, and Microsoft Office Excel (Version 2022). Data were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection (2004–2024). Results: A total of 1,672 ADRLC papers published from 2004 to 2024 were included. The number of global publications increased steadily, peaking in 2023. The United States had the most publications and citations, followed closely by China and Japan. The WORLD JOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGYpublished the most articles. High-frequency keywords included "hepatocellular carcinom", "cancer", and "disease" six major research clusters were identified, with "natural history" having the strongest burst impact from 2004 to 2024. Recent trends included "immunotherapy" and "cancer" (2021–2024). Cutting-edge research directions were "immunotherapy" and "immune checkpoint inhibitors". Conclusion: This study reveals the research directions and trends of ADRLC. The research on ADRLC is increasing globally, with significant contributions from China and the United States. Strengthening research on pathogenesis, early prevention, and individualized treatment of ADRLC is needed. Immunotherapy shows great potential in treating ADRLC and has become a current research hotspot.
