Abstract
Efficient numerical strategies for studying 3-D fractures in piecewise homogeneous domains have been developed based on the surface integral and finite element hybrid method. The basic procedure combines a surface integral model of the fracture in an infinite region with a finite element model of the uncracked bounded domain, leading to a coupled matrix formulation. Fractures approaching and/or intersecting planar bimaterial interfaces pose a special challenge because of the dual singularities in stress at the crack tip and at the material interfaces. The hybrid formulation was specialized for this class of problems by introducing the force dipole solutions for an infinite bimaterial region. Demonstration results which test the accuracy and generality of these procedures are presented.
