Abstract

A solution is obtained for the electromagnetic fields of a dipole of arbitrary orientation located within a cylindrical metal tube of infinite length. The external medium is homogeneous with finite conductivity. The expressions for the resultant fields are given explicitly for the case where the wall of the tube has a thickness small compared with the skin depth of the metal. A numerical example for magnetic dipole excitation is given for the case where the observer is in the external medium at the same level as the source. Not surprisingly, the results show that the metal casing in a borehole will have a severe shielding effect on the external fields.
