Abstract

A three-dimensional mode-matching theory for coupled- mode piezoelectric rectangular bar miniature resonators and bar mono- lithic fiiters is described. This theory is applicable to strong as well as weak piezoelectric materials. Good agreement between theory and ex- periment for many parameters of quartz resonators and filters is shown. A substantial amount of design information is presented. Novel non- rectangular resonator configurations, which promise further miniatur- ization, are suggested. The types of resonators and fiiters described are particularly relevant to the frequency range 1-10 MHz. Possible appli- cations include miniature oscillators for clocks, watches and colour sub- carrier in TV and miniature intermediate frequency (IF) fiiters requir- ing high frequency-temperature stability.
