School selection by parents is an important decision influenced by internal and external factors, such as location, cost, curriculum, facilities, and school reputation. This study aims to identify the main factors affecting parents’ decisions in choosing Islamic-based elementary schools. The theoretical foundation is based on consumer behavior and decision-making theories, which explain how individuals make choices based on perceived value, needs, and available information. The research employed a quantitative approach using surveys, analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The results indicate that the quality and religious values of the school are the dominant factors, including parental religiosity, quality of religious education, teacher competence, value-based curriculum, student achievement, and the development of students’ character and spirituality. Schools are recommended to focus on improving religious education, strengthening character, enhancing teacher competence, implementing a professional curriculum, and building reputation through the publication of achievements, testimonials, and creative promotional strategies. Transparency in facilities and costs is also essential to foster a positive image and increase parental trust. This study has several limitations, including the use of subjective survey data, a limited number of respondents, and a focus on Islamic junior high schools in East Java, which restricts the generalizability of the findings to other schools or regions.

  • Dec 31, 2024
  • Jurnal Pendidikan Islam
  • Annisa Nur Faradila + 1 more

Purpose – This study aims to examine the influence of principal leadership and self-development on teacher competence, with self-experience serving as a mediating variable. It investigates both direct and indirect relationships to understand how these variables contribute to professional capacity building in education. Design/methods/approach – This research employed a quantitative approach using an ex post facto design. The sample consisted of 58 teachers from two Islamic junior high schools in East Java, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire covering four variables: principal leadership, self-development, self-experience, and teacher competence. A five-point Likert scale was used, and the data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The evaluation included tests for convergent and discriminant validity, reliability, coefficient of determination (R²), effect size (ƒ²), predictive relevance (Q²), and both direct and indirect path coefficients. Findings – The results show that principal leadership has a significant direct effect on teacher competence (β = 0.468, T = 3.002, p < 0.01), but no significant effect on self-experience (β = –0.066, p > 0.05). Self-development significantly influences self-experience (β = 0.882, T = 5.897, p < 0.001), though its direct effect on teacher competence is not significant (β = 0.197, p > 0.05). Self-experience positively influences teacher competence (β = 0.324) but does not serve as a statistically significant mediator in the relationship between either principal leadership or self-development and teacher competence. The model explains 81% of the variance in teacher competence (R² = 0.810) and shows strong predictive relevance (Q² = 0.566). Research implications – Fi Schools and educational policymakers should support leadership development and design self-development programs that emphasize reflective practice. Teachers should be encouraged to engage in activities that integrate personal teaching experiences into their professional growth strategies to optimize instructional effectiveness.

Strengthening Students' Religious Character During the COVID-19 Pandemic
  • Jun 20, 2022
  • KnE Social Sciences
  • Nur Kholifah + 1 more

Students need a religious character to deal with changing times and moral degradation. The value of religious character includes three dimensions of relationship: the relationship of the individual with God, family and peers, and the universe. Religious character education that is sourced from religious teachings and muamalah and applicable moral values has been implemented and is firmly embedded in the educational institutions of Indonesia. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced teachers to keep their distance in educating, accompanying, and controlling students’ worship habits and morals, disrupting the character-building process. Routine activities such as habituation of worship and morals carried out in schools are no longer optimally instilled in students. Therefore, in an educational institution, effective and efficient management is needed so that the implementation of character education can run optimally, effectively, and efficiently during a pandemic. The strengthening of religious character is expected to continue even though teachers and students cannot meet face to face. Several studies have been synthesized with previous research to explain the description of character education management during the pandemic. A systematic literature review has been carried out to overcome this problem by documenting and reviewing all articles related to students’ religious character education from 2019 to 2020. The articles used in this study are 26 national and international accredited journal articles accessed from Lens, Google Scholar, SINTA, DOAJ, and Scopus. The results proved that there is a need for strategically managing religious character education to improve students’ religious character during the pandemic. Keywords: religious character, strengthening, COVID-19 pandemic
