Abstract

The lattice spacings of the hexagonal close-packed solid solutions of copper, silver, gold, cadmium and gallium in zinc have been examined in detail by the x-ray powder method. The changes in the lattice parameters and atomic volumes with electron concentration within the η phases are considered in detail and are discussed in terms of Brillouin zone overlaps. A method of correcting the lattice parameters for the effect of size of solute atom is proposed, and this is shown to lead to improved correlation of the experimental lattice parameter and volume changes with electron concentration for the different solutes.
