Abstract

Long-baseline bistatic radar systems have been investigated and built in the past, but short-range tactical applications of bistatic radar have not been explored in such detail. This paper briefly introduces the concept of bistatic and multistatic radar, compares the features of long-baseline and short-baseline systems, and describes a demonstration system designed to facilitate investigations into short-range tactical bistatic radar operation at X-band. This system, which is designed to be fully portable, features a phased array receiver with high-bandwidth digital beamforming, which can be used with a wide choice of modulations (pulsed and continuous), including high-PRF operation.
