Abstract

The project discussed in this article was a submission in the University of Miami Campus Master Plan Competition held in 1986, and received one of five Grand Prize Awards from the jury comprised of Aldo Rossi, Edmund Bacon, Paul Friedberg, William Morgan, and William Brubaker. This proposal reflects the author's concerns for urban design as a spatial investigation, identifying and reinforcing latent patterns of formal order, and reinterpreting historical precedents through abstraction. Today, the architect is the one individual in the urban design and planning process uniquely qualified to address these essential issues.
