Abstract

A portable hot-water drilling system designed for measurment of sea-ice thickness at small horizontal scales is described. The major components of this system are a fuel-oil-fired water heater, a generator to provide power to the oil burner, and a gasoline-powered water pump. The convenience and performance of this system are superior to that of a propane-fired system described in an earlier report.
