Abstract

The elastic modulus G on propeller shafts may be found by velocity measurement of ultrasonic transverse waves. This paper reports the finding of laboratory studies carried out with cylinders of various materials and reports the findings of workshop tests on solid and hollow shafts. In view of its effective and rapid application the new technique may supersede the traditional mechanical tests; it also has the advantage that mounted shafts can be tested and inhomogeneities detected.
