Abstract
This study examines the development of bamboo cultivation in Europe and especially in Italy. An economic and environmental analysis of two case studies located in Calabria was undertaken, looking at the multiple products that can be obtained from bamboo, notably the production of shoots and carbon sequestration. The results suggest that bamboo cultivation is well-adapted to the Mediterranean climate and has considerable ecological and economic potential. • First study on the economic and environmental aspects of bamboo cultivation in Italy • Multiple uses of bamboo: production of culms, sprouts and CO 2 storage • For Italian farmers, bamboo cultivation can represent an opportunity to diversify production and consequently income.
