Abstract

In the previous Chapter, we have presented the concept of a co-processor for the kernel, i.e., the time-critical part, of a real time operating system especially tailored for the extended real time programming language PEARL. The co-processor acts as system controller, and operates in conjunction with one or more conventional processors in hard real time environments. It is composed of three layers, which perform the functions as given in Table 4.1. Some of these functions constitute the operating system processor’s user interface, as they are invoked by application programs. In this Chapter we describe in detail the hardware modules of the proposed co-processor, and the software kernel algorithms executed in two separate subprocessors as primary and secondary event reactions.
