Abstract

Background: Acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies. Different techniques and number of scoring systems have been used for aiding in early diagnosis of acute appendicitis and its prompt management of which Alvarado score is the most popular. So we retrospectively applied and compared Alvarado and RIPASA score in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in Indian population. Materials and Methods: We compared retrospectively RIPASA and Alvarado scoring system by applying them to 85 patients in between June 2018 to November 2019. Both scores were calculated for patients who presented with right iliac fossa pain during the study period. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive (NPV), diagnostic accuracy for RIPASA & Alvarado system was done. Results: The sensitivity and specificity of RIPASA score were 91.78% and 66.66% respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of Alvarado score were 64.38% and 58.33% respectively. The diagnostic accuracy of RIPASA scoring system is 88.23% and that of Alvarado scoring system is 63.52%.
