Abstract

Selecting a suitable material for the parts of any product is considered as most influential aspects of any design process. In this aspect, in the field of automobiles, the steering knuckle is considered as vital components of the steering and suspension subsystem. Prevention of failure of the knuckle is to be carefully investigated as it connects the steering, suspension, braking system, and wheel hub to the chassis. It should withstand the different loads in different conditions. Light-weighted steering knuckles with high strength are always demanding especially in a racing environment. In this work, Data envelopment Analysis based Ranking (DEAR) algorithm is used to select the suitable material for the steering knuckle. By applying the DEAR algorithm Aluminium 7075 and AISI 1040 Carbon Steel (EN 8) were selected as suitable candidates for the steering knuckle used in Quad bike racing competition. Modeling was carried out using SolidWorks and static analysis was performed in the ANSYS workbench to understand its performance under different loading conditions. Finally, the test results were validated under real time scenario by taking part in the design challenge competition.
