Abstract

Non-repeatable runout of typical ball bearing and fluid spindles for 5-1/4 inch disk drives is investigated using capacitance probe techniques. Statistical methods are applied to calculate the one-sigma value of the non-repeatable runout using both time domain and frequency domain analysis. Fluid spindles exhibit substantially less nonrepeatable runout compared to typical ball bearing spindles.
