Abstract

Objective To investigate the causes, severity, medical care and ou tcomes of patients with industrial injuries in the region of Shijie town, Donggu an city, Guangdong Province, PR China. Methods An investigation was conducted on the 2427 cases of industrial injuries who had been treated in Shijie Hospital t o have a clear idea of the causes, severity, pre-hospital courses and outcomes of their industrial injuries.Results Workers of 18 to 30 years old were the high risk population in work-related accidents. The occurrence of industrial injuri es were mainly due to machine (73.4%). The most common injuries were hand ones (79.6%), and others were destroyed distal limb ends, fractures and soft tissues avulsion. 82.2%of the patients came to hospital within half an hour; and the p atients stayed in hospital for 12.05±11.26 days on average. The majority of the victims had no labour-protection care (85.6%), and 10.6%of them asked to be discharged just after emergency treatment due to financial difficulty. Conclusio ns Hand injuries by machinery during work are the most common type of industrial injuries in this region. Although the victims can usually be transported timely and treated immediately, the following and rehabilitative treatments are defici ent.
