Abstract

Spatial variations in the intensity of the Earth's magnetic field appear to be related to plate motions with plates tending to move from areas where the intensity of the magnetic field is diminished to where it is enhanced. This empirical correlation may be due to the presence of regions of enhanced heat transfer at the core-mantle boundary.
