Abstract

In this aricle, I address how intimacy, intrapersonally (trait) and interpersonally (state) contains the therapeutic action in an analysis of a traumatized woman named Veronica. The article summarizes the psychoanalytic literature related to the concept of intimacy. I discuss briefly how empathy, despite the analyst’s focus on its presence in the analysis, is not the key to the successful analysis. I then detail how intimacy, in its various forms, helps the analysis succeed despite the seeming distress of the patient and even sometimes that of the analyst.
