Abstract
A 60-year-old woman was referred to the hospital, oral and maxillofacial department, due to an asymptomatic swelling of 2 years’ duration in the right masseter. Magnetic resonance examination showed a well-delimited soft tissue mass with a high signal intensity on T2-weighted image. Underlying bone structures were preserved. Clinical examination suggested a benign lesion and an excisional biopsy was performed. Grossly, the mass seemed to be circumscribed and at least partially encapsulated, showing a gelatinous content when sectioned. Histologic examination revealed a paucicellular tumor composed of fusiform to stellate cells dispersed in an abundant myxoid component. Partial encapsulation and some fibrous bands within the tumor could be seen. In some areas, the myxomatous lesion dissociated these muscle fibers. A diagnosis of intramuscular myxoma was rendered. Follow-up of the patient was lost.
