Abstract
This article presents an interactive software application to analyze and validate the operation of distance relays and its application for educational use. The design stages and theoretical fundamentals of distance relays are described and the proposed application has been structured to evaluate various design alternatives that include signal processing and different tripping characteristics. The software allows for the evaluation and analysis of distance relay operation with real time or simulated events in several commercial and academic electrical programs. Several examples are presented to illustrate the capabilities of this graphical software tool.
