Abstract

An interactive computer program has been developed which allows students to simulate olivine fractionation from a basaltic or ultrabasic liquid. Both the parental composition and the distribution coefficient “K” may be changed as required. The menu-driven nature of the program allows the student to select ideal Rayleigh fractionation or equilibrium crystallization. The program is written in BASIC, runs on an Apple II microcomputer, and is available to interested teachers.
