Abstract

DURING a series of toxicological studies with insecticides, it became desirable to use a method of restricting certain apterous insects to the proximity of their host plants without creating the microclimatic conditions associated with cages. The apparatus detailed below was designed to confine apterous forms of pea aphids (Acyrthosiphum pisi Kalt) to pea plants in pots so that both plant and insect were fully exposed to the controlled environment of the laboratory. The system developed has also proved efficient when used against other non-flying insects, namely, Aphis fabae L., certain Noctuid larvae and Capsid nymphs, and it would appear to have a much wider sphere of application.
