Abstract
Antoine de La Sale’s Jehan de Saintré appeals to its readers across a range of narratives – including an episode recounting the sort of triumphant crusade against the “Sarrazins” of Prussia unknown to its late medieval readers for more than two centuries. This episode is particularly relevant, in Burgundian and Angevin circles, in the immediate aftermath of the fall of Constantinople in 1453. This paper will argue that La Sale’s wish-fulfilment pseudo-history can be profitably analysed in the light of the “counterfactual”.
