Abstract

Optical disks using organic dye binder recording media yield high performance,1,2 good environmental stability, and high recording sensitivity. Carrier-to-noise ratios > 65 dB (30 kHz bandwidth) have been attained. Their digital recording characteristics are highly linear. Bit error rates3 of 10−5 or less have been reported. Digital or video information is recorded by formation of pits in the recording medium. The basic recording mechanism4 in this medium is by ablation; owing to low thermal diffusivity of the medium, the recording process is essentially adiabatic.
