Abstract

The changing characteristics of shear strength parameters of red clay were analysed to consider the impact of stress path on soil strength by a true triaxial experiment which simulated the excavation process of a deep foundation pit. The methods were proposed to determine the reduction factors applicable to the soil strength and calculate the safety factors; the safety factors at difierent excavation depths were then back-calculated. This provided a more e‐cient way to assess the stability of deep foundations and to determine safe depths of excavation.
