Abstract
This study examined the factor structure of Susan Harter's Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents in a group of 248 academically talented adolescents. Exploratory factor analytic strategies indicated that four of Harter's eight factors (Scholastic Competence, Athletic Competence, Job Competence, and Behavioral Conduct) were substantially replicated. Results also indicated that items on four additional subscales (Social Acceptance, Physical Appearance, Romantic Appeal, and Close Friendship) were tapping the domains of general attractiveness and peer support. It was suggested that the psychometric properties of the postulated subscales be examined across ages and groups to determine their generalizability and that attention be given to obtaining concurrent and predictive validity evidence.
