Abstract This study employs a critical information design lens to interrogate whose knowledge is represented and whose voices are excluded in public transport systems. Focusing on migrant workers in Dubai, UAE, it foregrounds issues of equity, representation, and participation in the design of mobility-related information. Drawing on field observations and a participatory workshop with eleven participants, the research brings forward overlooked narratives of navigating buses, metro, and water transport. The findings demonstrate how critical information design can amplify marginalized voices, foster inclusion, and reimagine transport information infrastructures as socially responsive and contextually grounded — moving beyond a narrow focus on clarity and efficiency.

Media Visibility and Migrant Voices: Representational Segregation in the Nordic Platform Economy
 • Jan 23, 2025
 • Critical Sociology
 • Maizi Hua

The expansion of the platform economy has captured considerable media attention, yet the representation of platform workers in the media, particularly migrant workers, remains under-researched. This article investigates the media representation of migrant platform workers in Norway by analyzing 245 newspaper articles and 23 in-depth interviews with migrant food couriers. This article introduces the term ‘representational segregation’ to demonstrate how media representation of platform workers, characterized by hostile narratives, fluctuating media visibility, and exclusion of migrants’ voices, can contribute to the segregation between local society and migrant workers. Furthermore, migrant workers themselves engage in a form of segregation practice, characterized by their indifference to media, imagined negative representation, and intentional distancing from the media spotlight. This mutual representational segregation is rooted in the ostensibly egalitarian Nordic welfare system and exploitative tendencies within platform capitalism targeting racialized populations. This article enriches research on platformized racial capitalism through a Nordic lens.

The object of research is the integration of local passenger water transport in the transport system of the city. Among a number of problematic issues, one can single out the unpreparedness of the urban transport infrastructure for the implementation of water transport for the transport of passengers, although this type of transport is an important component of intercity and suburban passenger transport in world megacities located on water arteries.Water transport is characterized and passenger water transport in Ukraine is analyzed. The definition of «transport system» as a whole and separately in part of urban passenger traffic is investigated. The components of the transport system of the city are determined. The structure of the city transport system in Kyiv (Ukraine) is investigated and supplemented with its new subsystem in the element «city passenger transport» – local passenger water transport. Such a structural change makes it possible to qualitatively improve the existing transport supply of cities with water areas, and to offer local residents an alternative mode of transport. Implementation of a new type of urban passenger transport in the transport system of the city requires its detailed study. Therefore, this type of transport is structured, its classification is provided, the concept of «local passenger water transport» and its types are formulated: Water Bus and Water Taxi, which allows to offer them for further use in the scientific environment, in relation to local passenger water transport. As part of the research, it is proposed to identify elements of local passenger water transport, namely: passengers, transport, local passenger transport enterprises, regulatory entities, and local authorities. Each of the elements is proposed to be structured by type. Thanks to this, a modified scheme of the system of urban passenger transport is developed, which provides the basis for the harmonious implementation of this type of transport. The implementation of the proposed changes is justified by the socio-economic significance of this type of transport and the necessary qualitative structural changes in the urban transport system.

 • Sunira Mishra + 2 more

Background: In the contemporary period, rapid population growth and urbanization in Kathmandu Valley have intensified demand for public transport. This demand is particularly evident among the college students who use public transportation for daily mobility. The daily use of public services also invites various challenges that students have to go through daily. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine management students' satisfaction towards public bus transport service in Kathmandu Valley. In addition, this study aims to identify challenges faced by management students and propose managerial solutions to improve public bus services in Kathmandu Valley. Design/methodology/approach: This study is based on the service quality (SERVQUAL) model, which argues that public bus service quality qualities like affordability, availability, reliability, comfort, and safety impact the satisfaction of students. In order to find reality, the exploratory research design was chosen as the primary study paradigm. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to quantitatively assess the data. The relationships from the sample of 404 respondents were examined using Smart PLS 4.0. Findings: The findings reveal that the majority of the students were female, which implies that female students are more active in using public buses than males. Additionally, it found that every student in the Kathmandu Valley who was surveyed uses public transport, with the majority of them stating that they do so because bus fares are less expensive than those of shared vehicles. This study also demonstrated that affordability, reliability, comfort, and safety have a positive as well as significant impact on student satisfaction using public buses. Further, satisfaction also have significant impact on the actual use of public transport among students. In contrast, availability was found to have an insignificant impact on satisfaction. Conclusion: The study concludes that it is necessary to enhance the service quality of the public transport to enhance utilization among the management students in Kathmandu Valley. Service quality can be increased by focusing on affordable tickets, a reliable transport system, comfortable seats, and the safety of students, especially girls. Besides, a proper schedule should be followed so that students can easily plan their journey based on the timetable.

Introduction: Recent epidemiological and health impact assessment (HIA) studies suggest that a change from passive (car) to active transportation (cycling, walking) and public transport in daily life could improve health. Although a number of HIA studies have been conducted in adults, such studies are still lacking in children. Methods: We conducted a HIA of active and public transport to school in children (6-11 years old) in Barcelona, Spain. We collected information in local transport, environmental and health records, Urban Mobility Plan and scientific publications. Local measurement of particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) during travel to school in different mode of transports were performed. A transport scenario was built assuming a 50% reduction in the car trips to school and their substitution by active and public transport modes. Risk assessment approach was applied to estimate the annual morbidity related with the transport scenario. The health exposures included in the risk assessment were traffic incidents, air pollution exposure to (PM2.5), and physical activity. Results: The substitution of 50% school trips by car per day to public and active transport trips could avoid annually 5 cases of obesity and overweight, 10 cases of asthma and bronchitis, and 4 cases of traffic injuries per year in Barcelona. Conclusion: Transport policies focused on children, encouraging the use of public and active transport can produce health benefits. The HIA can be used as a tool to improve decision making process in urban and transport policies for children. The study also highlights the need to create more evidence for different age groups (as children) on physical activity and air pollution and multiple health outcomes

Migrant Workers: Recruitment And Travelling From Indonesia To Tawau (Sabah) Malaysia
 • Dec 31, 2018
 • Borneo Research Journal
 • Syed Abdul Razak Sayed Mahadi + 2 more

Migrant workers’ recruitment and travelling from Indonesia to Tawau (Sabah), Malaysia is a serious matter, which has not been thoroughly assessed especially the role or help of local employers in Sabah and the (un)secrete routes they use to bring the undocumented migrant workers to Sabah. This article is based on the Indonesia Labour Migration to Sabah (ILMS) Survey (in Syed Abdul Razak [2010]) conducted in 2009 and 2010, in which 896 migrant workers (both documented and undocumented) were interviewed. Also, informal interviews were conducted with employers, intermediaries and the officials in Malaysia and Indonesia. The article found that mandors and local brokers/village sponsors played an important role in the recruitment process of migrant workers. Mandors and local brokers (could be the village sponsors) worked within the social networks; they formerly linked employers with prospective migrant workers; while the brokers linked new migrants to institutional networks that operated through legal and unauthorised channels. However, the real demand or space for undocumented migrant workers was created from Sabah. The employers played an important role to sustain the problem of undocumented migrant workers. The study also found various factors, which facilitated migrant workers’ movement to Sabah that included improvements in water transport and telecommunication systems, the long-established, familiar networks, and the availability of groups which provided fake documents. There was more inclination to use informal channels because of the cost and procedures, whereas the migrant workers willing to take any kind and level of risk in search of livelihoods. The article concludes that for migrant workers, there was no clear distinction between legal and undocumented recruitment because the same people (mandors) arranged both things for them, but the real pull or demand came from the local people in Sabah. • Dec 12, 2018
 • Afroditi Stamelou + 3 more

Not all of the travel needs are adequately covered by the existing commercially oriented Public Transport (PT) services, while public funding is gradually being reduced. At the same time, disruptive global societal and market trends create new social challenges at local level. By activating the catalyst group of social entrepreneurs, new innovative solutions, with high social impact and value, could be applied filling the existing gaps in uncovered needs. At the moment, Social Entrepreneurship has not really been leveraged in PT in Greece, despite its potential. The involvement of the social entrepreneurs and social innovators towards the creation of more attractive, inclusive and sustainable PT related service for all, comprises an emerging and crucial topic. This was explored in the Greek national context by consulting professionals and experts coming from the mobility sector and social economy field, in the frame of an interactive, participatory workshop. The aim of this structured interaction that was based on the methods derived from collective innovation and focus group processes, was (i) the identification of potential synergies among Social Entrepreneurs and Public Transport, and (ii) the identification of potential barriers that such initiatives may face. Indeed, participants explored the fields where social entrepreneurs could be involved for the provision or the improvement of PT services and came up with some policy recommendations to overcome the identified barriers.

ABSTRACT

This article aimed to observe the safety protection of public road transportation and some public areas in Yogyakarta and Surakarta. The Road and urban public transport terminals, station, and transshipment centres were mainly established at the meeting points of different traffic lines. If we compare the terror-threat against infrastructure, building, and vehicles, then we can see that much more terrorist attacks were directed against the vehicles, than against bridges or tunnels. Safety protection on public road transportation and its public areas is one of the efforts to enforce right to life and right to sustain life in line with article 28A of Indonesian Constitution of 1945. This issue is important to be observed because two cities are prone to be attacked by terrorist and sometimes passengers or visitors are not responsive to disasters as long as they are on public road transportation and public areas. This article have two important problem to be observed, first problem is how already passengers or visitors of public road transportation and its public areas understand safety procedures of those areas?; second problem is how policy of safety protection need to be enforced on two public road transportation and public areas in order to protect right to life safely of passengers? The normative and empirical legal research is used to this research by using interviews and field observation. The result of this research concisely state that at this time the bus station and rail station is still not implemented maximum safety and security procedures to passengers and passengers or visitors do not understand about safety procedures and are not responsive to dangerous circumtances surrounded them. Maximum safety protection is important to prevent terrorism crime, narcoticss crime, and prevent any casualties due disasters. Security officers should check the condition of bags and luggage of passengers or visitors in order to prevent any threats there. Safety briefing is also implemented to keep a passengers concer.

Keywords: safety procedure, right to life, public area

Dynamic Stray Current Analysis for New DC Powered Transit Systems
 • Apr 3, 2005
 • Kenneth J Moody

Transit system designers, utility company operators and transit operating authorities all are extremely interested to learn the actual stray current levels and effects when trains begin operation on a new transit system. Designers conduct computer simulations to project stray current levels. Design criteria and specifications are formulated to try and to quantify the anticipated stray current results. Utility operators add test facilities for stray current data collection. But only after construction is completed can the tests be made to determine the real stray current level and characteristics of the new rail system. Throughout the planning, design, utility coordination, and construction phases; the term “amperes per 1000 feet (304 m) of double track” is used to describe how much stray current will emanate from the train operations. But, there is only one test-the dynamic stray current test-that provides the information necessary to analyze stray current levels and determine the actual amperes of stray current leakage as the train proceeds along the rail/passenger station system. This paper discusses the procedures, utility participation, and analysis techniques of the dynamic stray current test. Every new transit system, including new extensions of existing systems, should plan for this test throughout the design, construction, and start-up phases to assure the test is completed during a small window of time just prior to revenue operations. The data collected is invaluable for stray current results analysis and ongoing transit and utility stray current maintenance testing efforts.
