Abstract
The present experimental study aims to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of breathing therapies on respiratory status among patients with bronchial asthma in a selected hospital of Delhi. The objectives of the study were (i) to assess and evaluate the respiratory status of the patients with bronchial asthma in experimental group before and after administration of the breathing therapy; (ii) to assess and evaluate the respiratory status of the patients with bronchial asthma in control group; (iii) to compare the post-test respiratory status of the patients with bronchial asthma in experimental and control groups; and (iv) to find out the association between the post-test respiratory status of the patient and bronchial asthma in the experimental group with the selected demographic variables. The study was conducted at a selected hospital of Delhi. Purposive sampling technique was used to obtain the adequate samples. The sample comprised 20 bronchial asthma patients in experimental group and 20 bronchial asthma patients in control group. The conceptual framework was based upon King’s Goal Attainment theory. King indicates that assessment occurs during interaction. The nurses have special knowledge and skills regarding treatment, whereas clients have knowledge of themselves and their conditions. Perception: The ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses. Judgment: Judgment is the evaluation of evidence to make a decision. Action: The fact or process of doing something, typically to achieve an aim. A review of related research and literature helped the investigator to conceptualize the need of the study and to develop appropriate tool to measure the respiratory parameters of patients with bronchial asthma. The tool includes two sections: one section of demographic variables and the other section includes observation schedule with universal respiratory parameters. Pilot study was conducted from 16 December 2015 to 31 December 2015 with 10 patients, 5 in the experimental group and 5 in the control group. The final study was done from 12 February 2016 to 29 February 2016 in a selected hospital of Delhi with 40 patients, and the patients were equally distributed in the experimental group and control group. The results collected from the final study revealed the effectiveness of breathing therapies in the experimental group. The result of the experimental group was significant at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study suggest that the breathing therapies were effective in maintaining respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and peak flow rate of patients with bronchial asthma. The study has also discussed the implications in the field of nursing education, nursing research, nursing practice, and nursing administration. Based on the study findings, recommendations were proposed for future research.
