Abstract

The inlet length Le of laminar oscillatory pipe flow was difined as the maximum migration distance of fluid particles from the inlet. A "Three Subregion Model" was proposed for the inlet flow ; the region near the inlet was devided into three subregions according to the instantaneous axial position of the fluid particle relevant to Le. The are was estimated in the Reynolds number versus Strohal number plane where the inlet length Le could describe the axial position after which there were no further velocity distribution changes, and where the radial equation of motion could reasonably be neglected. An analytical solution of axial velocity was presented for this area. The validity of Le and the analytical solution was justified by the experiments made by means of a hot wire anemometer.
