Abstract
Measurements are reported of the complex, frequency-dependent susceptibility taken over a range of frequencies, including zero, and a range of packing fractions from 0.05 to 0.22. An analysis in terms of the Kirkwood theory of dielectric polarization is presented. At low values of packing fraction the Kirkwood correlation factor is equal to unity, leading to the conclusion that Onsager's theory of dielectric polarization provides an acceptable account of the dependence on packing fraction of the zero-frequency magnetic susceptibility of low-density magnetic colloids.
