Abstract

Contrasts in Punjabi between words with high and low tone vowels and unmarked vowels were investigated experimentally. Vowel duration and vowel quality differences were not found to be associated with tonal contrasts. Laryngeal or pharyngeal constriction may be associated with low tone. The high and low tones occur in phonological environments where in neighbouring Hindi and Urdu voiced aspirated consonants are commonly found.
