Abstract

rigidity under cultural pressure. For example, nocturnal emissions, intercourse with prostitutes, and, to some extent, masturbation would hardly have the same physiological and cultural significance for women which they have for men. With respect to the sex difference in tolerance indicated by the findings, some of the comments concerning rigidity under cultural pressure would apply by way of explanation. Frequently in the social realm, it may be noted that a subordinated, restricted minority group may introject the controls imposed from without. It is probably easier to live under cultural pressure when virtue is made out of necessity and controls are assumed to be natural and proper rather than irrational and arbitrary. It is well known, for example, that the humble noncommissioned officer in a military system may be a staunch upholder of discipline, especially for others. There should be no rash generalizations beyond the limited findings of this modest experimental study, but experimentation does provoke theorizing; and from empirically oriented theorizing may come more and better experiments.
