Abstract

Estrogens produce a delayed facilitation of synaptic transmission in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells that is N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDA-R) mediated and leads to an enhancement of voltage gated Ca++ channels (Joels and Karst, 1995; Woolley, 1998). Estrogen-exposure increases dendritic spine number, synapse density and the magnitude of long-term potentiation at synapses on pyramidal cells (Woolley, 1998; Foy et al., 1999).
