Abstract

The accuracy of some published equations to predict side muscle weight of cattle was assessed by fitting data from cattle of known carcase composition to them. A method of comparing the accuracy of different prediction equations is also described. The results indicated that there was considerable variation between the prediction equations in the accuracy with which they predicted side muscle weight in the test data. This suggests that such prediction equations should be applied to independent sets of data with extreme caution.
