Abstract
The BE-scale was developed to provide a measure of ethnocentrism relevant to the contemporary situation in Britain. It was constructed by a procedure reflecting the viewpoint of the response-style advocates and standardized on a small sample in Sheffield. A replication study has been carried out in Glasgow. This study shows that the scale is reliable and has stable characteristics, though it does not have a high level of acceptability in the population at large and its factorial structure is psychologically uninterpretable. The shortcomings of the scale stem largely from the use made of negatively worded items.
