Abstract

The connection between speed distribution and flow or concentration on a road depends on the possibilities of overtaking. Overtaking can only take place when there is a sufficiently large gap in the oncoming traffic and when the sight distance is large enough. The mean time spent by a vehicle that wishes to travel at speed u behind a vehicle with speed v is described by an expression (based on results by Gustavsson (1967)) that depends on the flow of platoons in the opposite lane and on the frequency of sight hindrances. With the use of this expression equilibrium equations are set up. The effects of varying concentration on speeds in both lanes are illustrated with an example.
