Corporate sustainability reporting has gained attention, but research gaps persist in applying ecological discourse analysis (EDA) to corporate texts. Current studies often rely on critical discourse or thematic content analysis, overlooking the ecological dimensions of language. There is a lack of integrated SDG discourse analysis that captures the complex interdependence of environmental issues and limited attention to subtle linguistic strategies companies use to frame compliance and sustainability, often bordering on greenwashing. This study addresses these gaps by applying an ecological discourse analysis to a fishery company's sustainability report. Data was taken from the English sustainability report of PT. Dua Putra Makmur Tbk (DPUM), downloaded from the company’s website, www.duaputra.co.id. The collected data were examined through an ecological discourse analysis (EDA) framework assisted by the UAM corpus tool to investigate the modality as the interpersonal vehicle that uncovers the company’s intention in building public trust and showing its commitment to the ecological equilibrium. Findings reveal that modality is mainly employed to show the company’s commitment to maintaining sustainable business practices. Ecologically, the sustainability report articulates an ambivalent discourse since the ecological commitment is concealed in the report, proven by the absence of modality referring to ability and willingness

Recently, ecological damage and environmental pollution have become increasingly serious. Experts in various fields have started to study related issues from diverse points of view. To prevent the accelerated deterioration of the ecological environment, ecolinguistics emerged. Eco-critical discourse analysis is one of the important parts of ecolinguistics research, that is, it is a critical discourse analysis of the use of language from the perspective of the language's ecological environment. Firstly, an ecological tone and modality system are constructed from an ecological perspective. Under the guidance of the ecological philosophy of "equality, harmony, and symbiosis", this study conducts an ecological discourse analysis on the Sino-US trade friction reports, aiming to present the similarities and differences between the two newspapers' trade friction discourses and to reveal the ecological significance of international ecological factors in the discourse. Secondly, this method establishes a vector expression of abstract words based on emotion dictionary resources and introduces emotion polarity and part-of-speech features of words. Then the word vector is formed into the text feature matrix, which is used as the input of the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, and the Back Propagation algorithm is adopted to train the model. Finally, in the light of the trained CNN model, the unlabeled news is predicted, and the experimental results are analyzed. The results reveal that during the training process of Chinese and English datasets, the accuracy of the training set can reach nearly 100%, and the loss rate can be reduced to 0. On the test set, the classification accuracy of Chinese text can reach 83%, while that of English text can reach 90%, and the experimental results are ideal. This study provides an explanatory approach for ecological discourse analysis on the news reports of Sino-US trade frictions and has certain guiding significance for the comparative research on political news reports under different ideologies between China and the United States.

  • Xu Song + 3 more

Ecological discourse analysis (EDA) has sparked growing attention in ecolinguistics. To reveal the status and trend of EDA (2014–2023), this research conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) on this topic, employing the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) statement as the established standard. After analysis, the SLR revealed that the number of EDA increased significantly between 2014 and 2023. Notably, Chinese scholars demonstrated the greatest focus on this topic. While EDA was widespread across various countries, international collaboration still needs to be enhanced. Meanwhile, some scholars tended to conduct EDA by adopting multiple research approaches. This SLR also unveiled the latest focuses on EDA, such as the language and its relationship with ecosophy, the ecological influence of discourses, the noteworthy topics of climate change and children’s literature, and the gap of the study on video discourse. This enables the employment of multimodal discourse research and interdisciplinary approaches for EDA to be the future trend. Since this SLR gives a comprehensive description of the trajectory of EDA, it can offer a meaningful reference for the studies relating to EDA in the linguistics domain.

Ecological discourse analysis is an important field in the study of ecolinguistics, which attempts to reveal the relation between human beings and the ecosystem through discourse analysis within an ecological framework. The view of language in systemic functional linguistics provides theoretical perspectives for ecological discourse analysis. The interpretation of ecological discourse through the experiential, interpersonal and textual meaning can provide insights into how discourse plays a role in constructing the relationship between human beings and the ecosystem. With the help of this framework, researchers can effectively and directly reveal the ecological meaning realized through languages, so that they can identify the types of discourses to promote eco-beneficial one, resist eco-destructive ones and refine ambivalent ones.

  • Niu Fan

The purpose of this study is to review the origin and development of Ecological Discourse Analysis and its relationship with transitive and ergative analysis, and make an ecological interpretation of William Faulkner’s The Bear according to the “participants” and “circumstances” of clauses under the six “processes” of transitivity system in Systemic-Functional Linguistics. It is found that this novel highlights the ecological philosophy of “Diversity and Harmony, Interaction and Co-existence”, and belongs to beneficial ecological discourse. Ecological Discourse Analysis, from the perspective of transitivity system, can enrich the means of discourse analysis, transmits a positive ecological value and orientation, and clean up people’s ecological behavior.

Sustainability reports provide a corporate performance’s comprehensive view from economic, social, and environmental perspectives to help stakeholders identify progress and areas for improvement as well as increasing public awareness. However, given the rising issue of “greenwashing,” false environmental claims often shown in company reports, it is important to examine the authenticity of a sustainable report, especially in its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to see whether the report actually reflects ecological responsibility or simply to improve stakeholder trust and company image. This study aims to examine the sustainability report of a fishery industry in Indonesia. Using a mix-method, i.e., combination of AI tools for initial summary of the report and qualitative Ecological Discourse Analysis (EDA), especially the framing and erasure theories of Stibbe (2015), the research seeks to identify the report’s alignments with indicators concerning responsible consumption (SDG 12), climate action (SDG 13), and ocean ecosystems (SDG 14). The finding shows that there are inconsistencies between the company’s ecological principles and its sustainability claims as revealed from its framing and erasure narrativization. The report’s focus on creating a corporate self-image as a consumer and market-driven company results in a lack of visible ecological accountability.

Qualitative Analysis in Gay Men's Health Research: Comparing Thematic, Critical Discourse, and Conversation Analysis
  • Jul 1, 2012
  • Journal of Homosexuality
  • Jeffrey P Aguinaldo

Gay men's health typically relies on traditional forms of qualitative analysis, such as thematic analysis, and would benefit from a diversity of analytic approaches. Such diversity offers public health researchers a breadth of tools to address different kinds of research questions and, thus, substantiate different types of social phenomenon relevant to the health and wellbeing of gay men. In this article, I compare and contrast three qualitative analytic approaches: thematic, critical discourse, and conversation analysis. I demonstrate and distinguish their key analytic assumptions by applying each approach to a single data excerpt taken from a public health interview conducted for a broader study on gay men's health. I engage in a discussion of each approach in relation to three themes: its utility for gay men's health, its approach to dilemmas of voice, and its capacity for reflexivity. I advocate that qualitative researchers should capitalise on the full range of qualitative analytic approaches to achieve the goals of gay men's health. However, I specifically encourage qualitative researchers to engage with conversation analysis, not only because of its capacity to resolve dilemmas of voice and to achieve reflexivity, but also for its ability to capture forms of social life hitherto undocumented through thematic and critical discourse analysis.

  • Yaru Li

Ecolinguistics studies the interaction between language and its environment. The ecological discourse analysis in the framework of ecolinguistics refers to the analysis of any discourse that has a potential impact on the ecosystem. The systemic functional linguistics of Halliday and the approach of ecolinguistics provide rich theoretical perspectives for ecological discourse analysis. The ecological discourse analysis based on systemic functional linguistics can help to reveal the ecological concept and ideology behind the ecological discourse, so as to improve people’s awareness of ecological protection and build a harmonious relationship between man and nature. Under the analysis framework of systemic functional linguistics, this thesis will analyze the ecological discourse of Jack London’s novel The Sea Wolf to explore the ecological orientation behind this novel.

Systematic Literature Review of Ecological Discourse Analysis From 2014 to 2023

  • Aixuan Chu + 2 more

One of the crucial foci of contemporary linguistics is upon the complex human-nature relationship within the Anthropocene. An essential methodology of eco-linguistics is Ecological Discourse Analysis (EDA), a field which combines linguistics and ecology. The philosophical underpinning of EDA is rooted in an ecological thematic framework, emphasising the significance of biodiversity and sustainability in the natural world. Despite gaining attention over the past decade, EDA still lacks a comprehensive explanation to adequately and accurately explain the fundamental assertion of its philosophical framework: it gives undue prominence to language biodiversity and sustainability. This systematic literature review, conducted using the PRISMA 2020 paradigm, covers studies from 2014 to 2023. It examines 38 works on EDA across several genres. Further clues illustrate the application of EDA to various genres, often informed by theoretical frameworks associated with systemic functional linguistics, cognitive linguistics, and corpus linguistics. EDA research concentrates on ecological discourse and advocating for protection, exposing the lack of nomenclature, analytical framework, application domain, theoretical framework, and objectives. Furthermore, EDA faces challenges in effectively addressing ecological issues within discourse construction because it does not have a sound theoretical paradigm or enough systematicity. Furthermore, the texts analysed using EDA predominantly focus on ecological discourse, with only a few studies incorporating non-ecological literary texts. This underscores the necessity of expanding the scope of ecological linguistic research.

Theoretical framework for ecological discourse analysis: A summary of New Developments of Ecological Discourse Analysis
  • Apr 7, 2022
  • Journal of World Languages
  • Ming Cheng

This article is a summary of the newly published book New Developments of Ecological Discourse Analysis. On the premise of reviewing the overall development of ecolinguistics, this book firstly develops the Hallidayan approach and defines Ecological Discourse Analysis as an independent paradigm. Based on the guiding principle of the ecosophy, “Diversity and Harmony, Interaction and Co-existence”, it then expands and extends the experiential, interpersonal, textual, and logical metafunctions within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. Consequently, it constructs the theoretical systems of Ecological Discourse Analysis from the perspective of ecolinguistics: the transitivity system, mood system, appraisal system, Theme system, cohesion and coherence system, and logical system. This book presents readers with a comprehensive and applicable theoretical framework for Ecological Discourse Analysis, that is, “ecological grammar”.

The Study of EDA in China during 2013–2024: Current Status, Development, and Prospects
  • Feb 26, 2025
  • English Language and Literature Studies
  • Yishan Ma + 2 more

Ecological discourse analysis (EDA), an interdisciplinary field within the ecological framework, aims to uncover the role of language in shaping ecosystems. It explores the construction of the human—ecosystem relationship through language and examines the emergence and propagation of speciesism and anthropocentrism. This study comprehensively reviews and deeply analyzes China’s EDA research from 2013 to 2024. Relying mainly on the CNKI database and using the CiteSpace analysis method, it examines multiple aspects, including research trends, corpus types, research perspectives, and authors’ contributions. China’s EDA research has shown a steady growth trend. Scholars have applied it in various fields such as literature, tourism, and news media, using diverse corpora like translations of classical Chinese poetry, English poems, and news reports. Research approaches like harmonious discourse analysis and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) have been widely employed. Nevertheless, several challenges remain. There is a shortage of quantitative research, insufficient exploration of discourse dissemination among social groups, and a delay in emerging media—related studies. For future research, it is essential to prioritize quantitative methods, focus on social—group differences, keep up with emerging media trends, strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation, integrate global and local perspectives, and monitor the dynamic changes in ecological discourse. This not only enhances China’s academic influence in this field but also promotes ecological protection by raising public awareness of the complex language—ecosystem relationship. Moreover, it can facilitate cultural exchange and understanding by comparing and integrating ecological discourses globally, enriching cultural diversity. In education, such research can offer valuable insights for curriculum design, helping students better understand ecological issues and fostering environmental responsibility from a linguistic perspective.

Creative (Critical) Discourse Analysis of Tiziano Ferro and Ricky Martin “Coming Out”
  • Jan 24, 2014
  • Qualitative Inquiry
  • Carlos Rivera Santana + 3 more

In this article, we explore and problematize the coming out discourses of Ricky Martin and Tiziano Ferro’s through a creative (critical) discourse analysis. We first contextualize the historicity of Ricky Martin and Tiziano Ferro’s artistic careers and argue that their coming out process is a privileged laboratory to understand the ways strategies and tactics of discourses are deployed. Second, through a Critical Discourse Analysis and collaborative writing inquiry approach, we present a creative fictional dialogue to showcase our analysis. This can be called creative (critical) discourse analysis. Third, we further reflect and theorize about these coming out discourses using Queer Theory, Governability, and the concept of Glory and the Media as privileged spaces for power. This will lead us to question the centered subject or a solid identity, the manifestations of coming out discourses, and the role of Glory and the Media in the socialization process.

  • International Journal of Linguistics, Literature and Translation
  • Yihao Gu + 1 more

Facing the current needs of socially sustainable development and ecological civilization construction, how to devote ourselves to the conservation of the ecosystem has become the focus of an increasing number of scholars. In the field of linguistics, the study of ecological discourse has become a new direction. Ecological Discourse Analysis is to reveal the ecological means of discourse through language analysis in order to prevent the ecological damage of human action. Hallidayan's approach emphasizes the role of language in ecological issues and the impact of language on ecological relationships, and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) lays stress on describing and analyzing linguistic facts in order to construct reality. Accordingly, this thesis conducts an ecological analysis of Shen Congwen’s classic book Border Town under the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics to explore the ecological relationship between man and nature reflected by the novel, with the expectation that this thesis will further arouse people’s awareness to environmental issues, lead people to rethink the role that human and nature play respectively and provide a new research direction for ecological discourse analysis.

Unraveling Ecological Discourse in The Vegetarian By Han Kang Under the Lens of Halliday’s Ideational Metafunction
  • Jun 5, 2025
  • Journal of Arts and Linguistics Studies
  • Dr Durr-E-Nayab + 1 more

Ecolinguistic discourse analysis entails the examination of discourses and their evaluation within a normative structure that acknowledges both the human experience and the integration of humans within a broader community of life forms. This normative structure, referred to as ecosophy, can manifest either explicitly or implicitly and is often oriented toward pragmatic objectives, such as the establishment of societies that are characterized by social justice and that actively safeguard and sustain the ecological systems upon which all life forms rely for their ongoing existence. This paper aims to employ the UAM Corpus Tool 3.3 corpus annotation software to perform ecological discourse analysis of novella “The Vegetarian” by Han Kang specifically examining the text construction and reality representation through the lens of processes, participants and circumstances. The objective is to elucidate Yeong-hye’s and other character’s perspectives regarding the ecological environment and nature while simultaneously demonstrating the applicability of ideational metafuction in perspective of ecological discourse analysis of translated text of this novella, thereby contributing to the expansion of research in the realm of ecological discourse analysis. This illustrates Han Kang’s ecological perspective characterized by an empathy for nature, a profound respect for the natural environment, a stance against the rampant degradation of nature instigated by human activities, and a call to action for humanity to safeguard the natural world. This paper is designed on mixed methods. This research employs quantitative analysis through extracting statistical analysis of most frequent ideational annotations by using UAM Corpus Tool 3.3 corpus software and also qualitative analysis through examination of processes, participants and circumstances resources found in the texts, in form of process types such as material, mental, relational, behavioral, verbal and existential resources. This study explores Yeong-hye’s renunciation of meat can be construed as an ecological act, signifying her refusal to engage in the violence that is inherent in the human exploitation of non-human animals.
