An annotated checklist of bryophytes of Europe, Macaronesia and Cyprus

  • N G Hodgetts + 25 more

Introduction. Following on from work on the European bryophyte Red List, the taxonomically and nomenclaturally updated spreadsheets used for that project have been expanded into a new checklist for the bryophytes of Europe. Methods. A steering group of ten European bryologists was convened, and over the course of a year, the spreadsheets were compared with previous European checklists, and all changes noted. Recent literature was searched extensively. A taxonomic system was agreed, and the advice and expertise of many European bryologists sought. Key results. A new European checklist of bryophytes, comprising hornworts, liverworts and mosses, is presented. Fifteen new combinations are proposed. Conclusions. This checklist provides a snapshot of the current European bryophyte flora in 2019. It will already be out-of-date on publication, and further research, particularly molecular work, can be expected to result in many more changes over the next few years.

The bryophytes of the Balearic Islands: an annotated checklist
  • Mar 1, 2008
  • Journal of Bryology
  • Rosa M Cros + 2 more

As a result of the revision of herbarium specimens and literature records, an annotated checklist of bryophytes of the Balearic Islands is presented. The distribution by islands is provided for each of the 328 bryophytes taxa (one hornwort, 67 liverworts and 260 mosses) currently accepted in the archipelago. Thirty-six taxa are to be excluded or doubtful. The highest number of species is found in Mallorca (298 taxa), followed by Menorca (159 taxa), Eivissa (92 taxa), Formentera (52 taxa), Cabrera (33 taxa) and Dragonera (32 taxa). The species richness of Mallorca is due to the presence of mountains which in the Serra de Tramuntana, rise to 1445 m. That of Menorca is due to acidic substrate, which are rare in the other islands.

Bryophytes of Mordovia State Nature Reserve (European Russia)
  • Jul 17, 2017
  • Folia Cryptogamica Estonica
  • Irina V Czernyadjeva + 2 more

The present study compiles the results of bryophyte species inventories made at the Mordovia State Nature Reserve from 2014 till 2016. The reserve is located near southern limit of deciduous-coniferous forest subzone. In total 96% of the reserve is covered by forests, where about half are pine forests. The annotated bryophyte checklist includes 142 moss species and 23 liverwort species. The data on collecting site characteristics, habitats, substrates, bryophyte species frequency, and sporophyte presence are provided. Presented treatment is a key contribution to the bryophyte flora of Mordovia and important for the knowledge on bryophyte distribution of this forested area within strongly anthropogenically disturbed European Russian landscape.

Monchique Special Area of Conservation, Portugal: a floristic and morphological–molecular study of the bryophytes of Serra de Monchique and the surrounding area reveals a remarkable diversity

Introduction. Serra de Monchique, in the Monchique Special Area of Conservation (SAC), Algarve, Portugal, is the most southwesterly mountain range in continental Europe. There is no published inventory of its bryophytes, and the massif has been bryologically neglected compared with other mountainous areas in Portugal. Methods. All bryophyte taxa across all the relevant habitats within Monchique SAC were recorded through non-systematised field sampling, focusing on the central massif. A comprehensive annotated bryophyte checklist was prepared, excluding doubtful taxa. IUCN Red List categories are discussed in the context of Natura 2000 habitats and species occurrence in 1 km2 UTM cells. Key results and conclusion. In total, 369 taxa (357 species excluding subspecies and varieties), comprising 268 mosses (114 genera), 85 liverworts (39 genera) and four hornworts (three genera), are catalogued, representing 52% of the taxa recorded for continental Portugal and 19.6% of the total European bryoflora, including 20 European endemics and 14 near endemics. In total, 137 taxa are new to Monchique SAC, 17 new to Portugal, and three new to science (Coscinodon monchiquensis, Marsupella lusitanica, Neodicranella hamulosa); one new species will be described shortly (Lejeunea convallaria ined.). Eleven species are threatened in Europe, 47 in Portugal. One (Bryoerythrophyllum campylocarpum) is listed on Annex II of the Habitats Directive. The bryological interest of Monchique SAC is confirmed as exceptionally high, ranking alongside that of top bryophyte sites in mainland Portugal, a remarkable conclusion given the poor condition of the SAC and threats from Eucalyptus afforestation, invasive plant species, wildfires and climate change.
