Abstract

The elastic post buckling behaviour of laminated, anisotropic plates is investigated. The Love-Kirchhoff assumptions and the Von-Karman large strain-displacement relations for thin plates are used. The potential energy function is formulated on the basis of an extensional plate theory. Solutions are carried out by means of the Raleigh-Ritz method with only the transverse displacement mode, w, assumed. The other two displacements, u and v, are determined exactly from the membrane equilibrium equations. Calculated results are verified against experimental and other analytical results. ‘Snap through’, unsymmetric and other interesting post buckling behaviours of composite plates are discussed.
