An Analysis of Global Research Trends in ICU‐Acquired Weakness
BackgroundICU‐acquired weakness (ICU‐AW) is a severe complication among critically ill patients and represents a common secondary neuromuscular dysfunction syndrome in the intensive care unit (ICU). It significantly impairs patients’ health, functional recovery, and long‐term quality of life.MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core Collection database for publications related to ICU‐AW, retrieving a total of 1866 records as of September 4, 2025. Using the bibliometric software CiteSpace and VOSviewer, we performed qualitative and quantitative analyses of publication trends, contributing countries, institutions, authors, and keyword co‐occurrence patterns.ResultsThe annual number of publications on ICU‐AW has shown a steady upward trajectory, peaking in 2021 with 186 articles. The United States was the most productive country, contributing 512 publications (27.44%). The University of Toronto emerged as the leading institution with 43 publications. The most prolific author was Lars Larsson (Sweden, 34 publications), and the most frequently occurring keyword was “intensive care unit.”ConclusionThis study is the first to provide a comprehensive bibliometric overview of global research on ICU‐AW. Our findings illuminate current research landscapes, highlight key contributors and thematic foci, and offer novel insights to guide future investigations into the pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and nursing interventions for ICU‐AW. Furthermore, the analysis enables evidence‐based forecasting of emerging research frontiers and evolving trends in this critical field.

ObjectiveEarly rehabilitation, which refers to multidisciplinary, structured interventions initiated during the acute phase of illness, aimed at promoting physical recovery, reducing disability, and preventing complications, is essential for critically ill patients with mechanical ventilation. To review literature related to early rehabilitation in patients with mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit, the paper aims to identify research topics and frontiers, report on current research trends, and offer valuable insights and perspectives for future development in the field.MethodsThis study retrieved related publications from the Web of Science Core Collection database on March 12, 2025. After collecting the data, CiteSpace V.6.1. R6 was used to conduct a visual analysis of countries, institutions, authors, cited journals, cited references, and keywords. Bibliometrix 4.1.3 was used to generate the main information, country collaboration map, and three-field plot. The data was visualized through knowledge maps and collaborative networks.ResultsWe obtained a total of 375 articles on early rehabilitation in patients with mechanical ventilation. The number of annual publications has generally shown a steady growth trend in the past 20 years, with an annual growth rate of 21.59%. The United States, Brazil, Australia, and England are major contributing countries. North American and European countries have established the most intensive cooperation networks. Most of the active scholars, institutions, and journals in this field come from the United States, Canada, Australia, and England. Our research shows that ICU-acquired weakness, pulmonary dysfunction, and disorder of consciousness are important issues as well as challenges that need to be addressed urgently.ConclusionThis study analyzed the current status of early rehabilitation in patients with mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit via CiteSpace and Bibliometrix, then identified the research hotspots and frontiers on it. While current evidence remains limited, methodologically rigorous multicenter randomized controlled trials with large cohorts are warranted to establish robust evidence regarding rehabilitation efficacy in mechanically ventilated patients. Emerging innovations in rehabilitation protocols are anticipated to progressively optimize clinical pathways as research methodologies advance.

Tuberculosis (TB) poses a serious threat to public health, particularly owing to the increase in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extremely drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB); thus, there is an imperative need for novel treatments to tackle this issue. Decaprenylphosphoryl-β-D-ribose 2'-epimerase (DprE1) is essential for mycobacterial cell wall integrity and viability. As no relevant bibliometric study has been reported, we performed bibliometric and visual analyses to depict the knowledge framework of research related to the involvement of DprE1 in TB. Relevant studies were sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection database. VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and bibliometrics (http://bibliometric.com/) were used to construct networks based on an analysis of journals, countries, funding, institutions, authors, references, and keywords. A total of 184 publications were retrieved; the total citations were 3405 times and the mean citation was 17.28 per article. The annual number of publications on DprE1 in TB has shown a significantly increasing trend. The European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry is the most published journal, with 19 articles. Lu Yu and Bin Wang contributed the most prolific authors with 18 articles. Stratified by the number of publications, India was the most prolific country that cooperated closely with the USA, UK, Japan, and United Arab Emirates. Burstness analysis of references and keywords showed that the developing research trends in this field mainly woven around "Mtb", "DprE1" and "inhibitors" during the past years. A systematic bibliometric study indicates that DprE1 remains a focal point in the anti-TB domain. These results can serve as a data-driven reference for future research and offer precise insights into the development of anti-TB agents associated with DprE1. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to comprehensively investigate DprE1 in TB by means of bibliometric analysis.

Many studies around the world in the field of scientometrics and research trends analysis are carried out using bibliometric techniques to analyze a specific research area or a special journal. The purpose of this bibliometric study was to investigate the research trends of the journal of Sport Management Review based on the Web of Science (WoS) citation database in the period 2011-2018. The findings of this bibliometric study can be useful for sport researchers and the editorial board of the above-mentioned journal. The results of this study showed that countries such as the United States of America and Australia, and universities such as Griffith University and Deakin University have the highest number of publications in the journal of Sport Management Review. Moreover, D.C. Funk and S. Fairley are the most prolific authors. Also, based on the journal evaluation criteria of Web of Science, the Impact Factor of Sport Management Review has grown steadily over the years. The co-occurrence map based on the author-supplied keywords of the papers published in SMR indicates that the keywords sport, marketing, intercollegiate athletics, sport development, sponsorship, sport management, sport policy, social media, professional sport, and sport marketing were the most co-occurrences and the hot topics in the journal of SMR. The current bibliometric study indicates the growing importance of international journal of SMR in terms of research and citation impacts.

As a promising neuromodulation technique, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been utilized to treat diverse diseases and the number of VNS studies has grown prosperously. Nonetheless, publication trends and research hotspots in this field remain unknown. This study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis to systematically identify publication trends and research hotspots in VNS research within a 20-year panorama. The Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database was retrieved to screen eligible VNS-related publications from 2002 to 2021. The online analytic tool of the WoSCC database was used to analyze various bibliometric parameters, such as the number of annual publications, the output of countries/regions, journals, total citations, citations per publication, and the Hirsch index. Bibliometrics (http://bibliometric.com/) and CiteSpace (version 5.6.R3) were used to identify research trends and hotspots. A total of 7,283 publications were included for analysis. The annual number of publications increased stably but it increased significantly in recent years. The top five prolific countries were the United States, China, Germany, England, and France. The top five productive institutions were the University of California (Los Angeles), Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, University College London, and the University of Texas at Dallas. Notably, there was a geographical imbalance in countries and institutions. In addition, Epilepsy & Behavior, Epilepsia, and Plos One were the top three journals with the largest number of VNS publications. Michael P Kilgard was the most prolific author. Moreover, evolving research hotspots mainly included the effectiveness and mechanism of VNS on epilepsy, the role of VNS as an anti-inflammatory regulator, the application of VNS for psychiatric disorders, and the neuromodulation effect of VNS in headache management. This study has revealed the overall publication trends and evolving research trends at a global level over a 20-year panorama. The potential collaborators, institutions, hotspots, and future research trends are also identified in this field, which will help guide new research directions of VNS.

Purpose Kidney disease represents a significant public health burden. Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, initially developed as antihyperglycemic agents, have demonstrated substantial renoprotective effects and emerged as a focal point in kidney disease research. This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis to evaluate the current state, research priorities, and evolving trends in SGLT2 inhibitor studies within the context of kidney disease. Methods Relevant literature on “SGLT2 inhibitors” and “kidney diseases” was extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection, and the PubMed database was used to search for and supplement clinical research trend analysis. Bibliometric analyses and scientific visualizations were performed using R-bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer software to map the global research landscape. Results A total of 1,561 publications published between 2009 and 2025 were analyzed. The annual number of publications has increased steadily. The United States is a core contributing country in this field, with strong international collaboration networks. Key institutional contributors include the University of Toronto and the University of Groningen, while prolific authors like Heerspink HJL and Wheeler DC are key contributors in this domain. Core journals are primarily concentrated in the domains of diabetes, nephrology, cardiovascular medicine, and metabolism, with the New England Journal of Medicine exerting the greatest influence. Research focus has evolved from glycemic control to multi-organ protective effects, with study populations expanding to include patients with non-diabetic CKD. Mechanistic investigations now extend to pathways involving inflammation, oxidative stress, and ferroptosis. Conclusion SGLT2 inhibitors hold considerable promise in the management of kidney disease. Future research directions are expected to emphasize elucidating their underlying mechanisms, evaluating long-term safety, and developing personalized treatment strategies.

Objective: Vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype switch (VSMCPS) plays a significant role in vascular remodeling. This study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis and visualize the knowledge map of research on VSMCPS. Methods: We retrieved publications focusing on VSMCPS from the Web of Science Core Collection database (SCI-EXPANDED) from 1999 to 2021. Using bibliometric tools, VOSviewer and CiteSpace, we identified the most productive researchers, journals, institutions, and countries. At the same time, the trends, hot topics, and knowledge networks were analyzed and visualized. Results: A total of 2213 publications were included in this analysis. The number of annual publications in the VSMCPS field exhibited an upward trend and could be roughly divided into three phases. Until 2006, the most prolific authors were from the United States. As of 2008, the number of articles published in China increased dramatically to reach 126 papers in 2020. As of 2014, China was the most productive country in this field. The United States ranked first in the number of highly-influential authors, institutions, and literature from 1999 to 2022. Owens GK, Hata, Akiko, and Wen, jin-kun were the most prolific authors. Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, Circulation Research, and Cardiovascular Research were the top-ranked journals in this field. "Vascular remodeling," "atherosclerosis," "neointima," "hypertension", and "inflammation" were the main researched topics. New diseases, new mechanisms, and new phenotype (e.g., micro RNA, macrophage-like-cell, hypoxia, autophagy, long noncoding RNA, oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, senescence, aging, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and aortic dissection) represent the trending topics in recent years. Conclusion: This study systematically analyzed and visualized the knowledge map of VSMCPS over the past 2decades. Our findings provide a comprehensive overview for scholars who want to understand current trends and new research frontiers in this area.

Objective To analyze the research bases,research hotspots,and future research trends in the relationship between the circadian rhythm and obesity,thus providing a reference for research in this field. Methods Literature on obesity and circadian rhythm published from 2001 to June 2024 was retrieved from the Web of Science.CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used for scientometric analysis. Results This study included 1 185 publications from 4 083 organizations in 354 countries/regions.Annual number of publications in this field showed an overall upward trend,with particularly rapid growth after 2019.Countries such as the United States and Ireland exerted significant influence in this field.Keyword co-occurrence and cluster analysis identified adipose tissue and meal timing as closely related keywords.The burst analysis indicated gut microbiota and DNA methylation as current research hotspots. Conclusions The research on the association between circadian rhythm and obesity primarily centers on the interaction between circadian rhythm and gut microbiota,which influences lipid metabolism processes,and on the regulation of circadian rhythm through meal timing to reduce obesity risk.Incorporating epigenetics in the research on circadian rhythm and obesity may represent an important future research direction.

The overamplification of human epidermal growth factor (HER2) in breast cancer (BC) has been the subject of numerous research publications since its discovery in 1987. This is the first bibliometric analysis (BA) conducted on HER2-positive (HER2+) BC. The purpose of this BA is to analyze the published research on HER2+ BC from 1987 to 2024, highlighting the most significant scientific literature, as well as the main contributing authors and journals, and evaluating the impact of clinical and lab-based publications on HER2+ BC research. The Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) was searched using the terms "Breast cancer" OR "Breast carcinoma" OR "Breast tumor" AND "HER2 positive" OR "HER2+". The search was limited by publication year (1987-2024) and only full English articles were included. WoS returned 7,469 relevant results, and from this dataset, a bibliometric analysis was conducted using the "analyze results" and "journal citation report" functions in WoS and the VOSviewer 1.6.16 software to generate bibliographic coupling and co-citation analysis of authors. The analysis encompassed a total of 7,469 publications, revealing a notable increase in the annual number of publications, particularly in recent years. The United States, China, Italy, Germany, and Spain were the top five most prolific countries. The top five significant institutions that published HER2+ research were the University of Texas System, Unicancer, UTMD Anderson Cancer Center, Harvard University, and University of California System. Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, Clinical Cancer Research, and Clinical Breast Cancer were the top three notable journals with the highest number of HER2+ BC publications. Dennis Slamon (Nc = 45,411, H-index = 51) and Jose Baselga (Nc = 32,592, H-index = 55) were the most prolific authors. Evolving research topics include anti-HER2 therapy in the neoadjuvant setting, treatment of metastatic HER2+ BC, and overcoming therapy resistance. This study provides an overview of HER2+ BC research published over the past three decades. It provides insight into the most cited papers and authors, and the core journals, and identifies new trends. These manuscripts have had the highest impact in the field and reflect the continued evolution of HER2 as a therapeutic target in BC.

To realize the dynamic visualization of forensic odontology based on the bibliometrics methods, and capture the research hotspots and identify the future development trend. Literature articles published from January 1995 to December 2020 were searched according to specific subject words in the core data set of Web of Science. The visualization analysis of publishing country, institution, discipline, author, co-cited journal and keywords was performed by CiteSpace 5.7.R5W software. The annual analysis of publications showed an upward trend of forensic odontology research literature year by year, with the number of annual publications more than 110 in the last five years. Developed countries were the main source of contributions and the average centrality was greater than 0.2. The research of forensic odontology involved multiple disciplines, including stomatology, biology, computer science and medical imaging, with a distinct interdisciplinary feature. A total of 115 nodes were obtained by keyword cluster analysis. The principal line of forensic odontology mainly included individual identification and age estimation and the emergence of hotspots was closely related to new technologies. Population-based odontology investigation, improvement of traditional dental age estimation method and dental age estimation based on new technology were popular research in forensic odontology. Developing countries urgently need to increase the focus on related research. It may be an important direction for the development of forensic odontology to establish and enrich the regional dental database, develop new odontology identification technology combined with frontier and high-end technology, and develop the identification program based on advanced information technology.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc displacement is the most common temporomandibular disorders (TMD) condition. It causes clicking, pain, limited mandibular movements, and even masticatory difficulties in many people. The aim of this study is showcasing hotspots and frontiers in the field and providing a reference for the future research by a bibliometric analysis. Studies published from 1992 to 2022 were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection on 23 April 2023. A total of 1882 studies (1739 articles and 143 reviews) were included in the bibliometric analysis. From 1992 to 2022, the annual number of publications and citations greatly increased. The United States of America (USA) contributed the most publications about TMJ disc displacement. Shanghai Jiao Tong University was the most productive institution; meanwhile, Yang, C. from this institution was the most prolific author. The University of Washington was the most influential institution, and Brooks, S. was the most influential author. Diagnostic criteria and management of TMJ disc displacement, as well as TMJ disc displacement-associated conditions, might be a hotspot for current global research. We provided an objective and valuable reference for future research on TMJ disc displacement.

This study is to understand and analyze the development history, research hotspots, and research trends in the study of microbial diseases of cultural heritage through bibliometric analyses in order to fill the current gap of no literature review in this research field and to make certain contributions to the research in this field and the protection of cultural heritage. Bibliometric and visual analyses of the literature on cultural heritage microbial diseases in the Web of Science (WoS) core collection were carried out using VOSviewer and R-bibliometrix, choosing the two main literature types of papers and reviews. The emphasis was placed on analyzing and summarizing core research strengths, hotspots, and trends. Six hundred sixty-seven documents (573 articles and 94 reviews) were retrieved. αIn the WoS core collection, the first literature on cultural heritage microbial disease research was published in January 2000, and the annual number of publications from 2000 to 2009 did not exceed one; the annual number of publications from 2010 onwards increased rapidly, and after 2018, the number of publications per year exceeded 60, reaching 94 in 2020, which indicates that cultural heritage microbial disease research is booming. Our research showed that Italy, the USA, and China were the leading research countries, and Univ Milan was the institution with the most publications. International Biodeterioration &Biodegradation was the most published and co-cited journal, and Gu JD was the most prolific author. The research hotspots in the study of microbial diseases of cultural heritage mainly include biological degradation of cultural heritage; identification of diseased microorganisms and disease mechanisms; cultural heritage microbial disease prevention and control methods; monitoring, prevention, and control of diseased microorganisms in indoor air; antibacterial agents, especially essential oils, nanoparticles, and other safe and efficient antibacterial products research and development; and exploration of the mechanisms of biofilm protection of cultural heritage on cultural heritage surfaces. Monitoring and identifying cultural heritage microbial communities, identifying disease mechanisms, and researching safe and efficient bacteriostatic products such as essential oils and nanoparticles will be the main research directions in the field of cultural heritage microbial disease prevention and control in the future.

El marco de acción se centra en las cadenas productivas del sector agropecuario en Colombia, teniendo como marco referencial 13 áreas temáticas, donde la identificación de referentes a nivel internacional para las cadenas productivas debe ser coherente con las demandas particulares de cada cadena y con las áreas temáticas que las abarcan, de tal manera que los resultados de este proceso sean insumo para el acortamiento de brechas y fortalecimiento del sector. Como caso de estudio se enmarca la investigación en el análisis de tendencias en investigación básica para las cadenas productivas del cacao, láctea, carne bovina y papa, obteniendo un análisis de tendencias en investigación, identificación de referentes internacionales, temáticas prioritarias, etc.

Background:In recent years, many studies have addressed cardiac aging and related diseases. This study aims to understand the research trend of cardiac aging and find new hot issues.Methods:We searched the web of science core collection database for articles published between 2003 and 2022 on the topic of “cardiac aging.” Complete information including keywords, publication year, journal title, country, organization, and author were extracted for analysis. The VOS viewer software was used to generate network maps of keywords, countries, institutions, and author relationships for visual network analysis.Results:A total of 1002 papers were analyzed in the study. Overall, the number of annual publications on cardiac aging has increased since 2009, and new hot topics are emerging. The top 3 countries with the most publications were the United States (471 articles), China (209 articles) and Italy (101 articles). The University of Washington published the most papers (35 articles). The cluster analysis with author as the keyword found that the connections among different scholars are scattered and clustered in a small range. Network analysis based on keyword co-occurrence and year of publication identified relevant features and trends in cardiac aging research. According to the results of cluster analysis, all the articles are divided into 4 topics: “mechanisms of cardiac aging”, “prevention and treatment of cardiac aging”, “characteristics of cardiac aging”, and “others.” In recent years, the mechanism and treatment of cardiac aging have attracted the most attention. In both studies, animal models are used more often than in human populations. Mitochondrial dysfunction, autophagy and mitochondrial autophagy are hotspots in current research.Conclusion:In this study, bibliometric analysis was used to analyze the research trend of cardiac aging in the past 20 years. The mechanism and treatment of cardiac aging are the most concerned contents. Mitochondrial dysfunction, autophagy and mitophagy are the focus of future research on cardiac aging.

BackgroundThe annual rise in breast cancer incidence is a significant issue that threatens women’s health and imposes various physical and psychological effects on male spouses, while these spouses often serve as the primary source of social support for patients.PurposeTo conduct a systematic analysis of publications, countries, institutions, journals, disciplines, authors, keywords, and references related to spousal support for breast cancer patients using bibliometric methods.MethodsWe searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) for publications related to spousal support for breast cancer patients from January 2004 to December 2024. CiteSpace (6.4 R1, 64-bit Advanced Edition) and Microsoft Office Excel 2019 were used for bibliometric analysis and chart generation.ResultsOur study analyzed 672 articles in the WOSCC database on spousal support for breast cancer patients over the past two decades. These publications have exhibited a trend of fluctuating growth. Research area primarily focuses on oncology, psychology, and nursing, with findings mainly published in Psycho-Oncology and Supportive Care in Cancer. The United States, Canada, and Australia lead this research domain, with the University of California system, Duke University, and Harvard University being the principal research institutions. Laura S. Porter and Donald H. Baucom are among the most prolific authors. The main keyword clusters include #1 caregiving burden, #2 quality of life, #3 sexual health, #4 qualitative study, #5 dyadic coping, and #6 marital status. The references focus on social psychology, intimate relationships, emotional communication, and coping interventions.ConclusionThis bibliometric study analyzes research on spousal support for breast cancer patients during the last two decades, outlining the publications, countries, institutions, journals, disciplines, and authors that have significantly influenced the field. Emerging trends in research on spousal support for breast cancer patients emphasize valuing the caregiving burden endured by spouses, exploring their support experiences, identifying spousal support barriers, and addressing intimacy challenges.

Critical care, defined as the diagnosis and management of life-threatening conditions that require close or constant attention by a group of specially trained health professionals, is inherent to the practice of cardiovascular medicine. The demand for cardiovascular critical care is increasing with the aging of the population and is reflected by trends in the use of critical care in general.1 Between 2000 and 2005, although the total number of hospital beds in the United States declined by 4.2%, the number of critical care beds increased by 6.5% and the annual costs attributed to critical care increased by 44%, representing 13.4% of hospital costs.2 Projections for the next 15 years suggest that the need for critical care will increase markedly in the United States and globally.1,3–5 For example, in Canada, a 57% increase in the need for critical care beds is anticipated during that period.5 Concurrent with increases in demand, the medical demographics of general and cardiac critical care have evolved toward a patient population with an increasing number of comorbid medical conditions who require more prolonged and more technologically sophisticated invasive support.
