An Analysis of Anglicisms in Croatian Language

Abstract

언어 접촉은 인류 역사상 가장 오래된 언어 행위이다. 오늘날 언어 접촉은 정보통신 기술의 발달로 다양한 분야와 방식으로 급속도로 진행되고 있으며 그 영향 또한 한층 커지고 있다. 세계화, 정보화 시대의 링구아 프랑카(lingua franca)라 할 수 있는 영어의 위상은 절대적이다. 영어를 국어로 사용하지 않는 국가에서 앵글리시즘(Anglicism)은 다양한 방식으로 수용되고 있다. 사회적, 정치적 이유로 20세기 후반 순수주의 언어정책을 고수하였던 크로아티아 또한 앵글리시즘 수용은 필연적이다. 민족적 정체성의 상징으로 순수한 크로아티아어를 지키고자 하는 순수주의 언어학자들에게 앵글리시즘은 크로아티아어를 오염시킬 수 있는 위협이다. 이와 반대로 진보주의 언어학자들은 앵글리시즘은 크로아티아어의 순수성을 위협하는 존재가 아닌 크로아티아어를 보다 발전시킬 수 있는 외부적 자산이라는 입장이다. 이러한 배경에서 이 연구는 우선적으로 앵글리시즘과 관련된 크로아티아 민족주의 언어학계와 진보주의 언어학계의 논의를 비교 정리하였다. 연구의 두 번째 부분은 크로아티아어에 나타나는 앵글리시즘의 음운적, 형태적, 의미적 수용 모델의 특징을 정리, 분석해 보았다.Today, many languages are open to the influence of the English language. The process of adaptation is different in various languages. This study provides an overview of certain English words, so called ‘Anglicisms’, which have become part of the Croatian language. Although there are linguists who are raising concerns about the influx of Anglicisms in the Croatian language, actual linguistic usage (e.g., using loanwords) is on the increase. What seems to be happening is a change in attitude concerning Croatian language, which is related to changes in the political situation. We value our language emotionally and protect it from foreign influences and threats. On the other hand, when there is no threat, we evaluate our language rationally. Today, some linguists view English as a threat to the Croatian language and some do not; this situation has resulted in two main tendencies toward either puristic or liberal views. In this context, this study initially compares discussions regarding puristic and liberal views related to Anglicism. The second part of the study summarizes and analyzes the features of the phonological, morphological, and semantic substitution models of sin the Croatian language. Emphasis is placed on the adaptation of certain nouns at three different levels: phonological, morphological, and semantic. At every level, there are particular tendencies in the Croatian language. Croatian language has not incorporated all foreign models of language passively; instead, it has adopted loanwords according to its rules for creating new words as substitutes for foreign language models.
