Abstract

investigated by placing laboratory lamps over certain areas of the stream. Temperature can be adjusted by adding an aquarium heater or by placing ice in the reservoir. About fifteen students can observe at the twenty-foot stream at one time. Two types of studies seem to be most fruitful: (1) the short-term, twenty-to-thirty minute observation of movement and orientation of all organisms introduced into the community and (2) the long-term, day-today observations of particular species, the growth of algae, and the movement of marked organisms. A small spot of fingernail polish on the shells of snails serves as a means of identifying individual snails. For additional information and ideas consult the studies of Lauff (1964) and McKay (1977); both researchers used an artificial stream for their studies. FIGURE 2. Photograph of pump and reservoir.
